Glitter in makeup is great but how about wearing full-blown glitter on the lips? Sounds like something you wish you’d never get caught dead in, right? Wrong! Glitter lips are extremely wearable and this latest Instagram trend is proof. Glitter lips are taking over the runways (are you following all the beauty trends that are breaking at the Lakmé Fashion Week S/R ‘19) and they look absolutely mesmerising.

If you’re itching to try it on your own (but don’t actually want itchy lips), here are some of our best tips on how to nail the look...

Prep well

Glitter isn’t known for it’s moisturising properties, and will dry your lips out. But you need to make sure that there are no cracks if you want your look to be perfect and last long. Scrub your lips with a conditioning lip scrub and follow it up with a super moisturising lip balm. Dab off the excess balm with a tissue before going ahead with the next step.

Get the base right, always

Get the base right, always

It is important to have a good base for the glitter lips to turn out just how you’d have pictured them. It is best to use a liquid lipstick (avoid using a lip gloss) as it completely dries down and is highly pigmented. Follow this up with just a little primer, so that it doesn’t dry the lips, yet makes the look last all through the night.

Glitter glue, for the win

The liquid lipstick ensures that the glitter sticks on to the lips with ease; it can’t make the glitter last all night. This is why you need to use glitter glue as a bond between the pigmented lip colour and glitter flecks.

Bring it on, that glitter

Bring it on, that glitter

Using a cotton swab or a fine lip brush or your finger, take some makeup grade glitter (this is important, because craft glitter often have glass or plastic bits that can tear your lip) and tap it onto your lips. Congratulations, your glitter lips are ready! Spritz oodles of setting spray and you’re ready to take on the night!
