What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a slimy, clear substance that your body produces naturally. Its main duty is to reserve water in your tissues to keep your skin moist. It has an unbeatable capacity to bind and retain water molecules in your tissues. In the cosmetic industry, is used for a bunch of things including supplements, eye drops, injections and most commonly in topical serums. As you age, the quantity of hyaluronic acid in your skin starts to deplete, thus creating fine lines, wrinkles and dryness. When incorporated in skincare, it can help your skin look plumper and healthier. But if done wrong, it can make your skin look dull and dehydrated. So, the question is - what is the right way to use this? Here’s the secret!
Hack to use hyaluronic acid serum the right way
According to the hack, hyaluronic acid serums need to be applied on slightly damp skin. When applied to damp skin, it traps all that moisture and water molecules on the surface of the skin to relieve dry skin. Hyaluronic acid holds 1000x its water weight and holds onto the water particles to make your skin plumper, dewy and hydrated.
Using a spray bottle, spritz some water on your face for this skincare genie to work. For better results, use a hydrating facial mist such as rose water or your toner on your skin before applying a hyaluronic acid serum. It is also recommended to apply this in a pressing and patting motion rather than smearing and massaging it into the skin.
Hyaluronic acid also needs to be followed up with a moisturiser. When topped with a nourishing moisturiser, it pulls all the goodness from your moisturiser and gives you the most of your products.
Best way to use hyaluronic acid:
If you have extremely dry skin, a hyaluronic acid serum can be your best friend. Serums have a more potent formula and deliver all the goodness of the ingredient to your skin more effectively.
Our personal fave is the Simple Booster Serum - 3% Hyaluronic Acid + B5 For Deep Hydration. This water-based serum contains 0.5% active hyaluronic acid and is made with 95% naturally derived ingredients. It provides deep hydration, soothes skin and improves skin texture. Besides that, the formula is enriched with another superhero ingredient of skincare, niacinamide, which is a form of B3 that helps in maintaining healthy cell activity in your skin.
The ideal order to include hyaluronic acid in your skincare regime goes like this — clean the skin with a mild cleanser > sprinkle a hydrating mist on your skin > apply hyaluronic acid serum and tap it into the skin > apply a moisturiser on top to seal the deal and slather sunscreen (if its daytime).
