Hair mask do’s and don’ts we bet you didn’t know about

In an ideal world, we’d be flipping healthy shiny mane without having to spend any time and effort on it. But in reality, we have to do a lot to maintain or hair and it still isn’t manageable. Hair mask is a simple yet effective solution for this and we have come to love it. But not every time we get the results we want!

Keep these do’s and don’ts in mind for your next hair masking session...

Do: Pick the right hair masks

Do: Comb through

Wait for 10-15 minutes and rinse

Leave the mask on for about 10-15 minutes and then rinse it off with cold water. This will help seal in the moisture and add all the goodness to your hair by closing your hair cuticles.

Towel Dry Them

Once you have rinsed the mask out, towel dry your hair. Use a microfibre towel to avoid damaging your strands. Make sure to not rub your hair or it will lead to frizz and breakage. Also, avoid using a hair dryer and let it air dry. In case you wish to use a dryer, don’t forget to use a heat protectant before.

I love using this TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Spray because it protects my hair from heat damage, leaves my hair smooth, soft, shiny, and frizz-free and tames all the flyaways.

Don’t: Use it everyday

Do: Comb through

Hair Masks Do’s and Don’ts

Remember these dos and don’ts for your next hair masking session

Do: Pick the right hair masks

Every hair requirement and type are different and therefore the treatment also varies. While picking a hair mask, pay heed to what your hair needs. If you have dry tresses, get a nourishing mask and if you have an oily scalp, a clay mask is better suited for you. So, choose wisely.

Don’t: Use it everyday

Everyday use of hair masks results in over-saturation of hair making it brittle. It is recommended to use it once or twice a week at most after hair wash.

Do: Do the time

Leave your hair mask for 15-30 minutes. Dip a towel in warm water and wrap it around the hair for visible results. Let the mask sit in and do its magic.

Don’t: Leave it for too long

Although there’s no proven fact that leaving the hair mask on for too long or overnight damages your hair, it may make your head heavy and scalp greasy, plus, leaving for long doesn’t mean better results so it’s safe to refer to the packaging and set the timer.

Do: Comb through

Just applying the mask isn’t enough as you may leave out some strands. Comb through to make sure you have got the product to the very last tip. But remember to use a wide comb as a fine-tooth comb tends to pull the product. Also, your hair is wet and fragile and may break.

Most Common Mistakes

You may be making a number of common hair care mistakes, some of which you may not even be aware of that can adversely affect the health of your hair. Here are some common hair mistakes that you must avoid while following your haircare routine.

Not Rinsing Well After The Shampoo

After three minutes of scrubbing the shampoo, rinse your scalp. Rinsing your hair for 15 seconds should be sufficient, though you may need more time depending on your hair type.

When you wash your hair, you should not rush through the rinsing process. Shampoos, rather than conditioners, are the cause of build-up on hair, so you should rinse shampoo completely from your hair before using conditioner.

Using Too Much Product

When it comes to shampoo, many people don't know how much they should use. Furthermore, by using expensive shampoo, you might be throwing away a lot of money. You can, however, determine how much shampoo to use. If you have short hair, a pea-sized amount should do the job. For medium length hair, a cherry-sized amount is sufficient. And for longer hair, take a coin sized amount.

Applying On The Whole Head

Rather than shampooing the scalp only, most people wash their entire head, which includes their hair as well. There is no need to lather up the ends. Dead skin, dirt, and sebum accumulate at the scalp, rather than at the ends 12 inches away. So, lather only on the scalp. When you rinse the lather through your hair ends, they are cleansed by the shear action of the lather.

Not Leaving Mask On For Enough Time

Many people often rinse their hair masks off, just like they do with their conditioners. However, hair masks need to be kept on your hair for a longer time for them to be absorbed by your hair and be effective. Ideally, you must keep them on for 10-15 minutes.

Using Mask Instead Of A Conditioner

There's no doubt that hair masks leave your hair feeling great. This is so appealing to the point that you will want to use it every time you wash your hair. Sooner or later, you'll find yourself relying on it even more, enjoying the shine it gives. There are usually subsequent problems such as an oily scalp, limp hair, etc.

When you overuse a hair mask, your hair becomes weighed down. Grease is also produced as a result of it preventing your scalp from breathing properly.

Generally, hair masks need to be used once a week. The frequency with which you use a hair mask will depend on a variety of factors, including the type of hair you have and the type of mask you are using. If your hair is very dry and damaged, you may want to use a deep conditioning hair mask twice or three times a week, but those with oily hair should only use it once a week. If you have straight hair, make sure you don't use hair masks more than two times a week. If you have curly hair, you should use it more often. We recommended using a hair mask for dry frizzy hair for curly hair, such as the Love Beauty & Planet Argan Oil And Lavender, Paraben Free Smooth And Serene Hair Mask. This mask is enriched with Moroccan Argan Oil that helps to tame frizz, nourish strands for smooth, gorgeous hair and relaxes you down with the calming fragrance of French Lavender essential oil.

Combing Wet, Dripping Hair

Wet hair is easier to comb than it is to brush, but tugging on it can lead to breakage. Use a smoothening hair serum to smooth out knots. Working in sections, start at the ends and comb up. However, remember to comb towel dry hair and not dripping wet hair.

I’ve been using the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Serum and almost finished it up because it makes my hair so soft, smooth, manageable, frizz-free, while detangling it. It also adds an amazing shine to my hair and keeps it frizz-free for up to 3 days!

Don’t: Leave it for too long

Do: Comb through

Now that you know how to apply hair mask correctly and the mistakes to avoid, keep in mind these tips and go all out with your mane!
