Hair Still Feeling Greasy After Washing? Here's Why

Hair still feeling greasy after washing? Here's why

A freshly washed mane that still feels greasy can confuse the best of us! You just shampooed your hair, and it either feels greasy right after or gets greasy in a couple of hours… frustrating, isn’t it?

How your hair looks and behaves after being washed largely depends on the state of your scalp. And turns out, it is some of your own hair care habits that are culprits behind it. Here are some of the mistakes that are responsible for your hair turning greasy right after a wash.

01. You are going overboard with the conditioner

No matter how dry your hair texture and type is, excessive conditioner use can leave your hair greasy post washing. The ideal amount to use is often recommended on the bottle and should always be applied across the length, avoiding the scalp. If you apply too much conditioner, it’ll be difficult to rinse it out thoroughly, and the oil and creamy ingredients from the product will settle in your mane and make it greasy.

02. That water is too hot

If you love indulging in scalding hot showers, we recommend you find a new way to relax your senses. Hot water can overstimulate your scalp, strip away moisture and produce more oil to compensate for the lack of it. Switch to lukewarm or cold water to rinse your hair to prevent it from turning greasy after a couple of hours post washing.

03. Your scalp has product build-up

Hairstyling, grooming or even cleansing products can lead to product build-up on your scalp. These products are formulated with heavy oils and potent compounds like keratin, which can settle on your scalp and make it greasier. Use a clarifying and detoxing shampoo-conditioner duo once a week or once in two weeks to get rid of any kind of build-up on your hair.

04. You are using the wrong leave-in treatment

Finding the right leave-in conditioner or treatment is an uphill battle. These products are pretty heavy-duty, and if you are using a strong formula for your hair type, it will weigh it down and make it greasy. Use lighter formulas and switch to watery or foamy textures instead of creamy and oily ones.

05. You are washing your hair too often

Your hair washing frequency may be equally to blame for it feeling greasy. It is a vicious cycle to get stuck in. The more you wash your hair, the greasier it will get. This is because your scalp keeps producing more oil to replace what has just washed away, which can, over time, lead to inflammation. Learn to oil train your scalp and stick to washing hair 2-3 times a week. Alternate with dry shampoo if you have an oily hair type and need to freshen up your mane in-between washes.
