4 reasons why you have acne on your scalp

Have you ever hit or popped a little bump in your head and it hurt a lot? That my friend is scalp acne, while some people might get one or two acnes occasionally, there are some who have pimples scattered throughout the scalp almost always. It is typically more common among people that have facial acne.

However, the reason for scalp acne isn’t always hormone-related. There are other factors that might be responsible for those painful bumps on your scalp. Finding the cause is the first step towards healing, so here are five reasons why you might have acne on your scalp.

PCOS

Fluctuating hormones can cause a lot of complication for the skin and hair. PCOS can cause your androgen levels to rise and can lead to an increase in sebum production on the scalp. Oral contraceptive pills are also androgenic and these can also cause the scalp to produce more oil.

Just like your skin, when there’s excess oil on your scalp, the pores get blocked and can lead to painful pimples. Seek help from a doctor or trichologist to get rid of this problem and prevent it in future.

Dirty scalp

Your scalp can become quite greasy if it is not thoroughly cleaned or cleansed. This can cause breakouts on the scalp. Wearing caps, hats or scarves that have not been washed from a long time can transfer bacteria to the scalp and lead to acne. You should also change your pillow covers frequently, which is a commonplace for germs and bacteria to breed. Use a deep cleansing shampoo, especially if you have an oily scalp.

Folliculitis

It is a type of skin condition that looks very similar to a pimple. But the spots are smaller, itchier and form large clusters. Folliculitis is usually caused due to bacterial infections, fungal infection or acne. Therefore, it is necessary to keep your hair clean and use products that thoroughly cleanse the scalp. You can also try exfoliating your scalp to get rid of any fungi that might be breeding.

While regularly washing your hair is essential, ensuring all the product is washed off properly is equally important. Any hair product remnants that haven’t been washed off properly can certainly cause acne to some extent. Does this mean you can’t use dry shampoo anymore? Certainly not, try washing it off every other day to see if that’s what is causing pimples on your scalp.
