What are the different types of dandruff and how to tackle them

Dandruff is one of the most common and chronic condition that affects millions of people across the world. This condition can be embarrassing and may even affect your day-to-day life, especially when it causes severe itching or when the flakes start to visibly appear on your clothes, making it almost impossible for you to wear dark coloured clothes.

There are many causes of dandruff — dry skin, poor hygiene, allergies, medical conditions, etc. — and if you thought the symptoms are the same for every person affected by it, um, you’re wrong. To tackle the problem, it is important to first identify the type (yes, there diff types of dandruff). Here are the four most common types of dandruff you need to acquaint yourself with.

Dry skin dandruff

Disease-related dandruff

The most common type of dandruff, dry skin dandruff is usually seen among those who have a dry scalp. It is more common during the winter, but taking a bath with hot water may also be responsible for this as hot water can cause the skin on the scalp to turn dry and flaky.

Treatment: Wash your hair with an anti-dandruff shampoo such as the Love Beauty & Planet Tea Tree and Vetiver Aroma Radical Refresher Shampoo and pamper your tresses with regular oil massages to relieve the itchiness as well as stimulate blood circulation

Oil-related dandruff

Disease-related dandruff

Accumulation of sebum, oil and trapped dirt can also lead to dandruff. The clumps of dead skin cells attract dirt and form itchy flakes on the scalp. Excess sebum production could be a result of stress and high anxiety levels.

Treatment: Try different methods to manage your stress and anxiety or seek the help of a medical practitioner.

Fungal dandruff

Disease-related dandruff

Fungal Malassezia is a naturally occurring component on the scalp. But it starts to thrive and grow on an oily scalp. This type of dandruff also appears in clumps and can be quite difficult to get rid of using regular anti-dandruff solutions.

Treatment: Talk to your dermatologist to get the right medication and treatment.

Disease-related dandruff

Disease-related dandruff

The fourth type of dandruff is a disease-related one; it is associated with skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. The overproduction of skin cells in both these skin conditions leads to scaly skin on the scalp. When it comes in contact with dirt and oil, it leads to dandruff.

Treatment: Consult a doctor immediately to prevent the spread of these skin conditions.
