You haven’t experienced real heartbreak unless one of your freshly manicured nails has broken, chipped or peeled. This happening once or twice is fine (sh*t happen and life goes on), but if this happens to you a bit too often, firstly, you have our sympathy, and secondly, you need to do something about it. Your nails are brittle and weak (read: unhealthy).

So, you don’t have to go through that ill-fated nail mishap, we have some tips to help you keep your nails healthy and damage-free. Here are three tips to avoid nail chipping and keep your nails looking healthy as ever.

Keep your nails hydrated

Keep your nails hydrated

Dry nails break and chip easily. Plus, handwashes, hard water and cleaning products all zap the moisture from your nails. Keep your nails healthy and moisturised with petroleum jelly or a hydrating cream or oil. Also, avoid using too much nail polish remover as it tends to dry out your nails.

Rub lemon on nails

Rubbing lemon on nails can make even the most brittle of nails stronger. It also whitens your nails and keeps them from chipping, peeling or splitting. The high content of Vitamin C in lemon makes nails strong and helps them grow faster.

Trim them regularly

It may sound contradictory, but the longer your nails are, the more chance of them breaking unexpectedly. Before something like that happens, file your nails regularly and trim them just enough, so they don’t go breaking… your heart.
