If you’re a fan of Star Wars, you probably already know the significance of the date, May the 4th. Chosen by fans themselves worldwide, the date is a pun on the famous phrase ‘May the Force be with you’ from the media series.

Star Wars has millions of fans across the globe who celebrate the day with gusto, donning costumes of Jedi Knights or of the Sith Lords and attending conventions dedicated to the franchise. Getting that cosplay look right, however, can be a bit tricky! So to provide you with some inspiration and to help you get ready for your ‘May the 4th’ festivities, here are a few makeup tips and tricks...

Fake the Storm Trooper Look

Fake the Storm Trooper Look

There’s a good chance that you’ve already worn the Storm Trooper suit, complete with the helmet multiple times by now. If you’re looking to do something different this year, we’d suggest you dump that rather heavy and suffocating armour that showcases the Storm Trooper look just as well, if not better.

For a look based on the ground troopers of the Galactic Empire, go with bold eye makeup that includes swipes and cuts similar to the Cleopatra look, albeit with a Storm Trooper feel. Try to opt for a foundation that is more translucent, so as to contrast the bold jet black eye and brow makeup with your skin. Keep the makeup to a minimal, finishing off the look by applying a blackish, purplish or a deep crimson red lipstick (preferably just the upper lip and the centre bit of the lower lip).

The Jedi Look

If you’re someone who associates more with the Light than with the Dark side, you’re probably going to want to not have anything to do with the Storm Troopers! Since you’re on the good side, try to keep the makeup soft and shimmery, opting for a metallic peachy eye shadow and a pinkish lip colour. As for the nails, shimmery orange or gold nail paint will gel in well with the rest of your look. If you’ve long hair, you could either keep it flowing loose like Qui-Gon Jinn or braid it like Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The Princess Leia Look

The Princess Leia Look

One of the most iconic characters within the Star Wars franchise is that of Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan. A princess, a feminist and an idol in her own right, Leia Organa has foiled the plans of the Empire’s evil schemes many a time. As for her look, just her cinnamon bun hairstyle could be good enough to complete your cosplay. With regards to the makeup, we’d suggest you keep this one minimal as well, using a long lasting foundation and some blush for highlighting the cheek bones. For the eye makeup, use a greyish-white shade of eyeshadow, merging it with an orange-tinged one towards the brow. A peach or orange tinged lip liner and the lipstick should help complete your Princess Leia look.
