Curling your eyelashes is one makeup step you shouldn’t skip if you want to look awake, bright-eyed and have your makeup look complete. Yes, makeup newbies, this one can look a little scary, but trust us, curling your lashes has the power to completely transform your entire look.
For the rest of you beauty junkies who’ve been trying to use a curler for years without getting the desired results, you’re probably doing something wrong. Here’s a look at the makeup mistakes you could possibly be making and how to avoid them completely.
- Mistake #1: You’re not curling your lashes first
- Mistake #2: Applying mascara before curling your lashes
- Mistake #3: Using the wrong technique
- Mistake #4: Applying too much force
- Mistake #5: Not heating the eyelash curler
Mistake #1: You’re not curling your lashes first
A lot of makeup pros prefer to curl their lashes right after they are done with their skincare i.e. before starting with their base makeup. What this does is it opens up the eyes and also helps to see the eye shape a bit better. Besides, you don’t want to risk smudging your under-eye concealer or the liner with the eyelash curler.
Mistake #2: Applying mascara before curling your lashes
This is an extremely common eyelash curling mistake that a lot of people tend to commit. Curling your lashes after applying mascara makes your lashes sticky and puts them at the risk of being pulled out by the lash tool. So, always curl your lashes first and then apply mascara. This will hold your lashes in place, and a good curling and volumising mascara will help maximise your curl.
Mistake #3: Using the wrong technique
The best way to give your lashes the gravity-defying look is to start by pumping your curler four to eight times at the root and then pumping up along the lashes until you reach the tips for a final curl instead of the unappealing crimped effect. This technique will give your lashes that perfect curve. But how long should you be holding the curler against your lashes, you ask? Simply clamp down on the lashes and hold tight for about 5 seconds.
Mistake #4: Applying too much force
Slow and steady is how you do it. Applying a lot of force or squeezing too vigorously can break your lashes or pull them out. Always be gentle when you squeeze the curler instead of pulling your lashes outward. It is important to use a good quality curler as that is what will ensure that you don’t need to apply a lot of force.
Mistake #5: Not heating the eyelash curler
Although we’ve heard of this tip a zillion times before, we still think it’s unnecessary. But the truth is a heated eyelash curler helps lock in the curl and make it last for hours. To add a little heat to the curler, simply hold a blow-dryer close to it for a few seconds prior to curling. But remember to blow on the metal curler before applying it to lashes to avoid burning yourself!
