For centuries, Indian women have been taught to put themselves, their needs and desires on the backburner in order to please everyone else in their lives. But that’s changed, and we’re happier for it. More women today realise that their happiness is what truly matters, and they’re willing to do what it takes to ensure they are leading their best lives.

For a lot of them, this means taking out precious time from their busy schedules for themselves to do exactly what makes them feel rejuvenated and fulfilled. And what better day to acknowledge and applaud them for what they do and how they do it, than International Women’s Day?

We spoke to five super successful millennial women about what it is that they do to pamper themselves and feel beautiful despite leading their busy, busy lives. Here’s what they had to say

“No matter how busy I am, I make sure I take some time off for myself. I do this by putting my phone away at least for a few hours before I hit the bed and completely ignore it for an hour after I wake up. This ensures that I sleep as well as wake up on a complete digital detox. I also ensure that every few months I take a break and travel, mostly to the natural wonders of the world and also digitally detox. Additionally, working out every day is something that really fuels me, keeps me going and takes away any stress.”

“Most of the time, my schedule tends to get so busy that I hardly find enough time to even get enough rest. But no matter how hectic it gets, I always make it a point to reward myself with a good massage. Be it a body, foot or head massage, spending some time at the spa helps me feel really pampered and gets me rejuvenated to take on any kind of madness that would come my way for the next few days.”

“One thing that I have started to do for myself to look and feel beautiful is only wear clothes or wear makeup that I feel good in, without giving a damn about what’s trending. Growing older has made me realise that I need to look beautiful only for myself, and that has made me a very happy person.”

“For me, I feel instantly beautiful after a great workout session. I strongly believe that beauty is both what’s on the inside as well as outside and working out only enhances that. When I exercise, my body releases endorphins, which trigger a positive feeling in the body and most importantly the mind. Secondly, the increased blood flow ensures that I have beautiful, glowing skin all day long. Now who wouldn’t want that, right?! This is what makes me feel really beautiful; both inside and out, even on an extremely busy, busy day.”

“Honestly, being a doctor and a mother are pretty full-time jobs and I’m left with very little time for anything at all. But even so, I always manage to take some time out for a relaxing spa as well as a pedicure. This little bit of ‘me time’ helps me detoxify my mind and detach myself from all those worldly problems. I am still in the process of figuring out a completely natural and sustainable pedicure option, but until I do that, I think this is one guilty pleasure I can’t help indulging in. Although, I only do this at home by myself to reduce whatever waste I can.”
