Growing and looking older is not a choice, it is an inevitable process. Yet some people age faster than others, with signs of ageing appearing on their skin and body sooner than they’d like. As we age, the production of collagen and elastin, which are the two compounds that keep skin plump and firm, depletes.
Although there’s no perfect formula to defy signs of ageing, a healthy skincare regimen, diet and lifestyle work together to minimise existing signs as well as prevent lines, wrinkles and saggy skin. We compiled an anti-ageing checklist that will ensure your skin looks radiant and youthful for years to come.
Moisturiser is a must for every skin type and at every age. Depending on your skin concerns and skin type, choose from a wide range of moisturisers available. Fine lines and wrinkles tend to appear sooner on skin that is dry. Applying a moisturiser traps water into our skin and gives it a more youthful appearance. For best results, use a body lotion and lip balm in addition to your moisturiser.
The foundation of any skincare routine is sun protection. The sun’s rays are destructive and make our skin age faster, therefore we suggest you stay away from the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen to every part of your body that clothing won’t cover. SPF 30 or higher is recommended for best protection. Also wear sunglasses to protect the delicate eye area.
Get your heart rate up at least three times a week, studies suggest that moderate exercise can improve circulation and boost the immune system. This in turn gives your skin a more youthful appearance. Practice deep breathing and meditation to keep stress at bay and prevent early signs of ageing.
Avoid white sugar
White sugar, smoking and alcohol are your skin's enemies that create inflammation and attack collagen, causing breakouts and premature ageing. Replace refined sugar with brown sugar or honey and reduce the intake of alcohol. If you smoke, we suggest you try and quit it right away.
Eat your superfoods
A healthy diet leads to healthy skin, so, if you want radiant and glowing skin, we suggest you include plenty of fruits, green leafy vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats in your diet. Make sure you drink adequate amounts of water during the day to stay hydrated inside out. Consume at least two to three cups of green tea a day to flush out toxins from your body.
