When you’ve got a chock-a-block schedule that leaves barely any time for things apart from work and travel, getting skin that looks healthy, fair and glowing can be a gargantuan task. Of course, things like environmental pollutants and the sun are relentless when it comes to leaving it looking tired and lackluster, but it’s never too late to make just a few lifestyle changes and land that fair complexion you’ve always wanted. Here’s what you need to do to get fair skin

Avoid prolonged sunlight

Avoid prolonged sunlight

Unavoidable tanning is obviously the first deterrent to fair skin, but there are ways you can beat it. Remember that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. So it’s best to wear a hat or a scarf, sunglasses and of course, slather sunscreen with SPF (read more about that here). The sun’s UVA rays activate the melanin pigment (gives your skin its natural colour) present in the upper dermis causing tanning. UVB rays, on the other hand, increase the melanin pigment deepening the tan, the kind that stays longer and strips the natural fairness off your skin. So if you wish to avoid this at any cost, make sure you use a reliable sunscreen every single day irrespective of the weather conditions.

BB tip: To keep things fun, opt for a chic fedora or carry a cute umbrella.

Suck on ice cubes

Suck on ice cubes

Might sound absurd but our editor has actually tried and tested this— suck on ice cubes to brighten your complexion and achieve fair skin. Well, when you suck on an ice cube, the several cells in your lips and cheeks are chilled – something that instantly causes an increase in blood circulation. This leads to rosier looking skin—the kind of skin you always yearned for. Who thought the solution to fair skin lied in ice cubes!

BB tip: Rubbing ice cubes on your face before a night out also helps in giving you an instant glow by constricting blood vessels, reducing any redness or puffiness and lending it a healthy glow. But make sure you don’t rub them on your skin for too long.

Get your dose of vitamins

Get your dose of vitamins

If you’re feeling like your skin isn’t getting enough vitamins through food, try consulting a doctor who can prescribe you Vitamin C and D supplements. Vitamin C helps you achieve a brighter and even complexion while Vitamin D prevents breakouts and keeps your skin from looking dull and damaged.

BB tip: You can use pure Vitamin C capsules on your face at night for a visibly brighter skin in the morning.

Just follow our simple rules to fairness and there’s no stopping you from achieving that flawless complexion you always wanted.

Homemade face packs for fairer skin

Homemade face packs for fairer skin

Lemon
We’re sure you’ve heard of using this ingredient as a fairness home remedy before – it is the staple of skin whitening. The acidic nature of lemon, as well as its high vitamin C concentration, allows it to act as a bleaching component, helping to reduce any dark spots and facial discolourations. It is also a great natural exfoliator – it effectively removes older skin cells on the surface of your face (often these cells may be pigmented) leaving you with fresher, brighter skin.
All you have to do is apply some lemon juice to the localized area, leave it on for about 10 minutes, and then rinse your face thoroughly with water.

Turmeric
This is another home remedy for fairness that works wonders for evening out your skin tone and makes sure it’s looking the very best it can. Turmeric contains a substance called curcumin, which is great for reducing the production of melanin, which is responsible for causing skin pigmentation.  In addition to this, it also has anti-inflammatory properties to help treat any aggravations or acne on the skin.
To make it most effective, combine one teaspoon of the powder with 3 teaspoons of lemon juice in a paste. Leave this paste on the specific discoloured areas for around 10-15 minutes before rinsing the mask off with water.

Egg pack

Egg pack

The best thing about this mask is that it only has one ingredient – egg whites! And yet, it is still amazing for reducing any imperfections on your skin. Apart from containing high amounts of vitamins that contribute to reducing wrinkles and fine lines, egg whites are also great for removing any excess sebum or oil from your face, thereby helping to treat acne.
Take a single egg and beat it until it becomes foamy. Apply this all over your face, leave it to rest until it is fully dried and then wash it off with water.

Orange peel pack
Before you throw away your orange peels, why not try this face mask if you’re looking to brighten your complexion? Oranges are able to fight the free radicals that are responsible for so many of the imperfections on the skin; they contain citric acid which is great for dealing with acne. In addition to this, oranges also contain copious amounts of vitamin C, a super tool for anti-agingit helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines on the face.
Mix one tablespoon of orange peel powder, one tablespoon of honey and a bit of lemon juice together, and add some water in order to get a pasty consistency. Leave this mask on your face for around 20 minutes and then rinse off thoroughly with water.

Rice flour

Rice flour

If you’re trying to fight that tan after a day spent on the beach, this is the perfect way to get your skin back to normal. Rice flour is full of para amino benzoic acid, a great protectant against the sun, and also boosts vitamin C production, which we already know is great for skin whitening. In addition to this, it also contains a substance known as tyrosinase which plays a huge role in controlling how much melanin (responsible for skin discolouration) is present in the skin. Finally, rice flour also helps regulate sebum levels, minimizing acne incidences.
Mix together 2 tablespoons of rice flour and 3 tablespoons of milk with 1 teaspoon of honey. When you first apply this mask, rub it in by softly massaging your face. Leave it on for around 20 minutes and then wash it off and dry your face.

Cumin seeds
If you’re looking to give your skin that healthy glow (which you obviously are), cumin seeds are the ultimate ingredient. Their anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties make them the ideal for dealing with any redness or outbursts of acne – if your skin has been angry lately, use this to calm it down and whiten your complexion.
Boil a teaspoon of cumin seeds in 2 cups of water. Use this to wash your face daily–it will help rejuvenate and freshen your complexion, in turn making it look lighter.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes

Although it may be a controversial fruit (or is it a vegetable?), tomatoes are undoubtedly a saviour when it comes to whitening skin. It is heavy in vitamins that not only reduce any blemishes and dark spots but also give your skin a lift by increasing collagen levels and removing wrinkles; it further contains magnesium which is known for making your skin glow. Doesn’t it seem like tomatoes were made to brighten your complexion?
To reap the benefits of tomatoes, create a mask with a just few drops of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of tomato juice – mix them together and then apply it all over the face. Keep the mixture on for approximately 15 minutes before taking it off and washing your face with water.

Baking soda
Here’s our last fairness treatment to uplift your skin and give it that extra bit of radiance. Baking soda is extremely useful as an exfoliator and can help remove any discoloured or pigmented old skin cells that may be making your skin tone uneven. It also really soothes the skin – its anti-inflammatory properties work wonders for dealing with any skin blemishes and aggravations.
All you have to do is mix 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 2 tablespoons of baking soda and apply it to the discoloured areas of the skin. After about 15 minutes, rinse the concoction off with lukewarm water, dry your face and put some moisturizer on.
