“Should I skip makeup when I have a breakout?” This is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive as beauty experts. Therefore, we decided to get to the bottom of this, once and for all. You may have heard from several people around you to avoid foundation like plague when you have acne since it can make your acne worse. But how true is that? Let’s find out...

The beauty world believes makeup should be used to enhance your beauty and not hide your flaws, but then not all of us are blessed with clear flawless skin and have to resort to makeup to cover up skin problems. While foundation does not cause breakouts, certain factors associated with it can. Here are common makeup mistakes you should avoid.

Using the wrong foundation

Makeup does not cause breakouts but certain formulas or products can clog pores leading growth of bacteria and therefore acne. Look for non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic or mineral-based foundation to reduce the risk of acne. Also, since your skin is prone to acne avoid heavy formulas such as stick foundation that looks patchy and blocks pores.

Remember how we are always told to keep our hands off our face because it transfers germs and cause irritation? The same logic applies while wearing foundation. Invest in a good makeup brush or sponge and clean it regularly to avoid skin problems.

Wear shimmery formulas

Shimmery formulas may look great but they contain an ingredient called Bismuth Oxychloride, which can make your acne worse. So avoid it as much as you can but if you have to absolutely wear it, ensure you use a primer to get a protective layer between your skin and the makeup.

Wear makeup at the gym and beach

Avoid wearing makeup to places where you’ll be sweating excessively. Sweat and increased temperature opens your pores which can easily get blocked if your skin is covered with makeup.
