What is oil cleansing?
Oil cleansing uses a combination of pure and natural oils over the skin to gently clean and dissolve hardened plugs of sebum without harming the uppermost layer of your skin. Oil can be used to remove makeup, soothe irritated skin and tame breakouts. This is because cleansing oils contain soothing and hydrating ingredients that don’t irritate your skin.
What are the best oils for cleansing?
The oils that have been traditionally used in the oil cleansing method are olive oil and castor oil. Start with a 1:1 ratio of the two oils, but if you have dry skin, increase the quantity of olive oil and for oily skin, use a little bit more of castor oil. Some of the other oils you can use are almond oil, avocado oil and sunflower oil.
How to oil cleanse?
Start with pouring 1 to 2 teaspoons of the essential oils of your choice in the palm of your hand. Apply the oil to dry face and massage your face gently with your fingers to remove makeup, dead skin and other impurities. Wait till the oil penetrates your skin. Use a damp, warm washcloth to gently wipe away the oil. Be gentle while doing this. Alternatively, you can just rinse with warm water if you want some of the oil to stay on your skin. Pat dry with a towel and apply moisturiser.
How often should you oil cleanse?
Since this is a deep cleansing method, it is strongly advised that you follow this method only once a day or once every two days. It will work best in the evenings when dirt, oil and other debris need to be thoroughly removed. It's especially important if you've been wearing sunscreen, makeup and/or any silicone-based products.
What to expect after oil cleansing?
After you’ve cleansed your skin using oil, your skin will feel extremely soft, supple and hydrated. Your skin will also feel extremely clean as all the excess dirt, sebum, makeup and other impurities would have been sloughed away, leaving behind clean, healthy skin.
