Before you start to wonder why we’re asking you to imitate a cat, you need to know that we’re not! While adopting a cat sounds like a purrfect idea, today we’re discussing the internet’s latest beauty fad—mewing! It involves tongue postures and claims to improve face shape and jawline non-surgically. Sounds complicated? Allow us to simplify it for you.
Here’s everything you need to know about mewing, the beauty trend...
What is mewing?
Mewing is aligning your oral posture in a certain way to better your face shape. It involves training your tongue to rest in a certain posture so that it becomes a part of your muscle memory. This technique was popularised by London based orthodontist Dr. Mike Mew, hence the term mewing. Dr. Mew states that, “Mewing is simply resting your entire tongue on the roof of your mouth until it becomes an unconscious resting position for your tongue whenever your mouth is closed.”
How does it help?
- Proper tongue positioning is the key to higher cheekbones and a well-defined facial structure. It makes your jawline stronger and improves overall face shape.
- When your tongue is placed right it also keeps neck pain, headaches and jaw pain at bay.
- People who ace holding their tongue correctly are less likely to have crooked or crowded teeth.
How to do it?
While the technique may seem a little strange at first, once you have aced it and trained your brain to do it, it gets fairly simple. To do it correctly, rest your entire tongue on the roof of your mouth, now you might say you already do that. That’s true, most of us do that but here you have to include the back of your tongue as well and ensure that it fits right between your molars. Since the muscles in your mouth are weak you may find it a bit tiring in the beginning. If you feel some pressure on your chin, jawline and mid-face then you’re doing it correctly.
