Toner is the second step of a skincare routine and quite an important one. It resets the pH balance of your skin and strengthens the protective barrier, which gets disrupted while cleansing. A lot of women skip this essential skincare product thinking it is just another step that lengthens their skincare routine. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Toner is not only important, but there is a right way to use toner and it differs from one skin type to another. Read on to find out how to apply toner according to your skin type.

Combination to oily skin

A lot of people argue that toners are only for those with combination or oily skin. That is not true; every skin type needs a toner, but the method and type of toner differs. When it comes to oily and combination skin, look for alcohol-free toners and ones that contain AHAs. You will feel a gentle tingling sensation after applying an AHA infused toner, which means that it contains the right amount and is working for your skin. Use cotton pads to apply toner to your skin as this will pick any residue or impurities that might be on the top layer of your skin. Wipe from the inner to the outer part of the face in gentle swipes.

Normal and sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is most susceptible to irritation and reactions, therefore it is best to stay away from harsh, alcohol-based toners that might irritate the skin or cause redness. After washing your face with a gentle cleanser, use a natural ingredient-based toner such as a rose water one to hydrate and soothe your skin. While applying the toner, use your fingertips to tap the toner into your skin until absorbed. The heat from your hand will help absorb the toner better.

Dry skin

Dry skin

This skin type requires the most hydration because it feels dry and stretchy after cleansing and requires immediate hydration. You would argue that using a moisturiser would do the same. It will, but toners are easily absorbed by the skin, seep into the deeper layers of the skin and act quicker. Moisturisers mostly work on the surface layer of the skin. For extremely dry skin, we recommend the sheet mask method. Soak a few cotton pads in toner and apply them to your face as a sheet mask and let it stay for five to 10 minutes.

And that is how you apply toner according to your skin type. Get with it already!
