I can't begin to list out all the risky experiments I have pulled with my beauty routines; just because I was bored. I cut my own bangs, and although it was a success, I don’t recommend anyone try it at home. With the ongoing 21-day lockdown imposed to fight the spread of the virus, the chances of being bored and DIYing something has increased. While it is okay to give yourself a facial, something like an at-home bikini wax can be a big no-no. If you are planning to take that giant leap of faith on yourself, read this first!

Is at-home bikini waxing safe?
While salon procedures like gel manicures do not require a very high skill set; waxing is something that is best performed by an aesthetician. They are trained in the ins and outs of the right way to wax to avoid any burns, infections, or injuries. Even if you have a little practice doing it by yourself, an at-home bikini wax is never going to be popular as a DIY option.
Our bikini area is susceptible; probably even one of the softest skin sections on our body. It is easy to burn or bruise this skin, sometimes even rip it off. There is a certain finesse and speed that comes with practice; which we do not possess on our own. This choppy condition can lead to both: an unsatisfactory result and hurting yourself. Not to mention viral and bacterial infections that can happen due to chemicals present in the wax. So no, while it is is technically safe to bikini wax at home, most dermatologists, and us will advise against it.
What is the right way to use a bikini wax strip?
With the above warning in place, if you still wish to give yourself an at-home bikini wax, some tips can help reduce the chances of an accident. The best option we have is to use a pre-made waxing strip. These can be used by heating up between your hands. Clean the area; you can use micellar water and make sure to let it dry. A good wax will only be seen when the hair is at least 2-5 mm long.
Apply the strip in the direction of the hair’s growth. Before removing, hold the skin tight parallelly and remove the piece in the opposite direction. Make sure this is quick and don’t wax the same area again for at least 24 hours; give it time to calm down and heal. You have to wash it correctly to avoid any infections; avoid alcohol-based products and let it breathe.
Are there other options for hair removal available?
Yes; while in quarantine, it is a far better option to shave than wax. While waxing the bikini area, make sure to use shaving cream to soften up the hair and run the razor in the direction of the hair’s growth; this will cause less irritation. Also, make sure your blade is kept in a dry area and does not have any hint of rust on it.
In our opinion, the best thing to do is to embrace this natural state of hairiness for a while! Sure, you might trim once in a while for general upkeep, but it’s better than getting a nasty skin burn that will take all the aloe vera in the world to treat. The rest is your call!
