How to repurpose expired makeup products instead of tossing them

Makeup products have a shorter shelf life as compared to skincare products. Using expired makeup products can be quite harmful for your skin. Having said that, a lot of us haven’t used makeup since lockdown; this means we have full-sized makeup products sitting in our vanity, nearing their expiry dates (BRB, crying!).

However, instead of tossing them away, you can repurpose these makeup essentials and give them a new lease of life. Surprised? It’s true. Here’s how to repurpose expired makeup products instead of tossing them away.

Eyeshadow

Lipsticks

Eyeshadow palettes come in so many different shades and it’s heartbreaking to throw it away. But here’s a way to repurpose them – turn it into a customised nail paint! Simply take the pigment out, crush it up and mix it with a clear polish to get a unique colour. You can even mix two shades to create something exciting.

Mascara

Lipsticks

One makeup product that has the shortest shelf life (six months, approx.) is mascara. It becomes too thick to use post that and should be tossed away because it is unsafe and can cause nasty eye infections.

However, the wand can be used as a beauty tool. Wash the wand to get rid of excess mascara with warm soapy water. Use the clear wand as a spoolie to shape your brows, tame flyaways by spraying a little hairspray on it. What’s more is that it can also be used to exfoliate your lips, along with a lip scrub.

Lip balm

Lipsticks

It can be quite a bummer to find that your lips balm has expired before you reached the bottom of the tube. But don’t throw it yet, here’s how an expired lip balm can be helpful. Apply it on your cuticles to nourish them or use it on the rough skin on your feet to soften it. It also helps prevent shoes from rubbing against the skin and causing blisters.

Ok, so this isn’t exactly a hack to repurpose expired lipstick, but it can definitely help you use your favourite lip colour that has dried out. Melt the lipstick in a hot spoon and add a little bit of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly to it. Transfer to an empty container and use it as a tinted lip balm all year round.
