No more panda eyes! 5 tips to prevent mascara from smudging

Imagine finishing a stunning eye makeup look; with the perfectly blended eyeshadow and an on-fleek cat eye, only to realise that your mascara has smeared a few hours into wearing it. Unintentionally smudged makeup is every girl’s worst nightmare, and running mascara is a common makeup mishap we’d much rather avoid.

If you have never dealt with this issue, then consider yourself lucky, but for those of you who’ve fallen victim to the smudged mascara problem, this article is for you. Here are some super useful tips and tricks on how to prevent smudged and running mascara.

Avoid cream formulas

While cream-based products feel amazing on your skin and prevent it from drying out, they don’t exactly help your mascara stay put. Cream eyeshadows, eyeliners, and even eye creams tend to create an oily, slippery base for your mascara, which creates a higher possibility of your mascara smudging. If you’re prone to smudged mascara, avoid using cream products on that area. Instead, opt for gels, powders and matte textures.

Keep blotting papers handy

Do you have oily eyelids? This is a really common problem and creates a slippery platform on your eyes resulting in smudged mascara. But here’s an easy solution: simply dab a blotting sheet onto your lids and under your eyes prior to applying makeup to soak up any excess oil.

Use eye primer

While an eye primer is a must for each and every person, it is especially so for a person with oily eyelids. It helps prep your lids for all of the eye makeup to follow and creates a long-lasting, smudge-free base. Apply one as the first step in your eye makeup routine and reap the benefits.

Set your makeup

One of the key steps in makeup application that we all tend to ignore more often than not is the setting process. After you have finished applying makeup, including mascara, set it with a generous amount of setting spray to prevent any smudging during the course of the day.

We have all been trained to apply mascara to our top lashes first, but we recommend you to start from the bottom. The reason is pretty obvious; you end up lifting your lids as you apply to your bottom lashes. This causes the half-dried mascara to transfer from your top lashes to the brow bone. Hence, always coat your lower lashes first and wait a minute or two between coats to give your mascara time to dry and prevent transferring.
