2020 was one of the most unpredictable and life-altering years of our lives. Every aspect underwent a significant change this year, right from the way we work to our beauty routines. While masks and sanitisers were the two most essential things this year, we also realised the importance of skincare as makeup took a backseat. This changed our relationship with beauty considerably.
As we get ready to embrace the new year, we are also taking some important beauty lessons we learned from this unforgettable year into 2021. Here are five ways our relationship with beauty changed in 2020.
- 01. Prioritising skincare
- 02. Less is more approach
- 03. Trying DIY skin treatments
- 04. Shopping consciously
- 05. Looking presentable for the camera
01. Prioritising skincare

Sitting bare-faced with little to no exposure to environmental aggressors made us notice how our skin behaves. As the use of makeup reduced, many women found that their skin looked healthy with fewer problems. Foundations and lipstick got replaced with moisturisers and lip balms as fresh, dewy skin took centre stage in 2020.
02. Less is more approach

We’ve been saying this for a while now, but it took a pandemic to really understand that less really is more. Whether it's replacing a 10-step skincare routine with a basic CTM or skipping the use of foundation and opting for a CC cream, we did it all. Since the less is more approach is working for our skin, this is one approach we are definitely carrying into 2021.
03. Trying DIY skin treatments

During the lockdown, when we couldn’t pamper our skin to treatments at the salon or at the dermatologists’ clinic, DIY treatments were all we had. Whipping up masks and scrubs using a few natural ingredients from our pantry proved to be useful. DIY emerged as one of the most prominent skincare trends this year. We are definitely carrying the no-chemicals, all-natural treatment into 2021, are you?
04. Shopping consciously

With no option of retail therapy in the first few months of lockdown, we were forced to take a closer look at all the products sitting in our stash. For some, this meant rediscovering their favourite moisturiser, and for others, this meant using a full tub of night cream before moving on to a new one. This gave way to conscious shopping and carrying this habit into 2021 will save us a lot of moolah.
05. Looking presentable for the camera

We’ve interacted with more people on video calls this year than in person. Before the pandemic, we knew how to do our makeup for office and an evening look. However, makeup for the camera is a bit different, and that’s what we learnt this year. Concealer and mascara became the go-to makeup products that made us look presentable in front of the camera. In 2021, our Insta feed is going to be lit with the perfect selfies!
