A few years ago, the only places to spot the latest fashion and beauty trends were magazines, red carpet events and the ramp. But with social media becoming an inseparable part of our lives, bloggers, makeup artists, and experts are making the best use of these platforms to showcase new trends in a refreshing way.
Platforms like Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok have become our go-to source for inspiration, and updates on the latest happenings in the beauty space. Last year, we saw quirky trends like pastel hair, graphic eyeliners, colourful eye makeup looks, etc. dominate our social media feed. But this year, we’ll be seeing a mix of subtle and bold trends taking over our feeds. Scroll down for a list of the top five beauty trends you’ll be seeing on Instagram and Pinterest in 2021.

Skinimalism is a beauty trend that surfaced amidst the pandemic on Pinterest. It involves ditching your heavy foundations and cakey formulas and focusing more on skincare. Spending more time on skincare than blending the base is the mantra everyone seems to be following in 2021. So gear up to see more skin care-focused TikTok videos and bare-faced selfies on IG.

We predicted that 90s trends are making a comeback as brown lipsticks, thin brows, and shag haircuts were gaining momentum on social media at the beginning of the year. But looks like millennials and Gen Z seem to be throwing it back even further. We’re talking about reviving the 80s beauty trends when big curls and OTT eyeshadows were a thing. #Myparentslook started trending on TikTok where creators were seen recreating their mum’s yearbook and wedding photo looks.
03. Bold eyes

While some of us have embraced minimal makeup, others are opting for bold looks, especially for the eye area. The idea is to only highlight the eyes as that’s the only part visible when you wear a mask. Graphic liner, rainbow eyeshadow, shimmer eye looks are a few fun and trendy ways to rock the bold eye look.
04. Pastel eyeliner

A simple and easy way to switch up your regular makeup look is by ditching the classic black and opting for quirky shades. Enter: pastel colours. The search for ‘pastel liner’ has increased tenfold over the last year. A simple line on your lids with lots of mascara can completely change the look!
05. OTT nails

Just like makeup, the nail department has also been divided into two teams: minimal and sophisticated; bright and OTT. No matter which one you prefer, there’s enough inspiration on social media platforms for both, so go on and explore!
