Sulphates are one of those ingredients that are always in contention — are they as bad for you as many say and what will happen if you cut them out from your hair care routine completely? Well, if one of your BFFs has advised you to not act so “dramatic” and told you that sulphates in products won’t cause you too much harm, we have some news for you. Sulphates are detergents or surfactants that help bind dirt, grime and oil when mixed with water and clean it right off. Found in shampoo, face cleansers, body washes and even toothpaste (!), sulfates are really harsh and can excessively dry out whatever you are cleaning with it (including your skin and hair).
Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium Laureth sulfate are two additives that can strip your scalp of sebum by generating a rich lather. This gives you the false impression that the products are cleaning your scalp when, in reality, sulphate-free products are equally capable of doing it and are gentle about the process. Sulphates in your hair cleaners will irritate your scalp over time and even lead to breakouts near the hairline.
In our opinion, the cons of sulphates outweigh the pros by a large margin, which is why we like to put our trust in these sulphate-free hair cleansers that help nourish your hair while cleaning it...
