The health of your hair depends on that of your scalp. When your scalp is clean and well-nourished, your hair will grow stronger and longer. But if you only focus on your strands and overlook the roots and scalp, you will never get the hair of your dreams.
To ensure your scalp gets the attention it should, you have to get rid of any product build-up that might be making your follicles weaker. When combined with an oily scalp, it could hinder the growth and health of your strands. Massaging your scalp with clarifying scrubs will not only remove dead cells, product build-up and oil but it will also promote blood circulation.
Here’s how you can make your own clarifying scrubs.
Salt and olive oil scrub

The combination of salt and oil in this scrub removes dry flakes without making the scalp dry. Salt exfoliates the scalp to dissolve any product residue whereas olive oil ensures your hair doesn’t get too dry.
You will need:
- 2 tablespoons sea salt
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Step 01: Mix salt and lemon juice together in a bowl and massage into wet scalp.
Step 02: Let it rest for a few minutes and rinse off.
Step 03: Wash hair with a mild shampoo.
Brown sugar and apple cider vinegar scrub

Sugar buffs away dead skin cells, dandruff and unclogs follicles. ACV lifts deep-set impurities that cause scalp build up. It also adds a healthy shine to your locks.
You will need:
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ACV
- 3 drops rosemary essential oil
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
Step 01: Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and massage into your scalp using your fingertips, in circular motions.
Step 02: Allow it to sit for several minutes, you can cover your hair with a shower cap to avoid a mess.
Step 03: Wash off with lukewarm water and a mild shampoo.
Almond and tea tree oil scrub

Tea tree oil works as a natural antiseptic in removing dirt, itchiness and bacterial infections. Ground almond exfoliates the scalp and improves blood circulation without drying out the scalp.
You will need:
- 2 tablespoons ground almond
- 2 tablespoons clarifying shampoo
- 4 drops of tea tree oil
Step 01: Mix these ingredients in a bowl and massage the mixture on your scalp using your fingertips for three minutes.
Step 02: Let it stay on for a few minutes before it washing off.
Along with these scrubs, use a scalp detoxifying shampoo to prevent product build-up in the first place. The Tresemme Botanique Detox & Restore Shampoo is free from parabens and is also safe for colour treated hair.
