The secret to air-drying your hair perfectly

Most hair wash days look like this - oil hair, shampoo, condition, towel dry and then blow dry before heading out. But what did women do before hairdryers were invented? Yes, they let their tresses dry naturally. That may be the reason behind their shiny and healthy mane.

The method of air-drying involves allowing your hair to dry naturally without the use of a hairdryer. Here’s how it’s done.

Step 01: Shampoo and condition

Step 05: Keep it open or tie a loose braid

The first step is to shampoo and condition your hair (duh). If you wash your hair too frequently then you need to cut it down to twice a week; overwashing can result in frizz. If you exercise regularly and can’t go without washing your tresses daily, then simply rinse your hair without shampoo and apply conditioner on the tips.

Step 02: Comb hair

Step 05: Keep it open or tie a loose braid

Carry a wide-tooth comb with you in the shower and comb after shampoo and conditioning to remove knots and tangles. Also, don’t brush or comb your hair once it has started to dry as this will make your hair frizzy.

Step 03: Use a towel to squeeze water

Step 05: Keep it open or tie a loose braid

Towel drying is essential but the friction can be quite damaging for your tresses. Use a soft cotton towel to gently squeeze excess water. Do not rub your locks aggressively as it can lead to frizz and damage.

Step 04: Apply a leave-in product

Step 05: Keep it open or tie a loose braid

If you haven’t invested in a leave-in serum or conditioner already, now is the time to do so! Frizz and dryness mostly affect the ends, therefore while applying these products, focus more towards the ends. Also, avoid touching your tresses too much after you’ve applied the product. Allow your hair to absorb the nourishing goodness.

Step 05: Keep it open or tie a loose braid

Step 05: Keep it open or tie a loose braid

Now remember, whatever position you let your hair dry, it will stay that way. If you want light waves, make a three-section classic loose braid and allow it to air-dry for perfect waves. Ensure that the braid isn’t tight or it will lock the dampness in the hair and invite unwanted issues.
