A lot of people suffer from hair fall and thinning despite their best efforts. You follow a hair care routine religiously, you eat healthy and you protect your hair like your life depended on it. And yet, your hair betrays you and comes away in clumps along with your hair brush. If this rings a bell, then here’s a cause of hair thinning that you may not have thought of–your hairstyles.

This may come as a surprise, but hair thinning is often caused due to really tight hairstyles that end up pulling and tugging at your hair follicles. This makes your hair follicles quite weak, leading to rapid hair loss and thinning.  Although some hairstyles look really chic, it is best you steer clear of them. They could be causing a lot of damage to your lovely strands. Steer clear of these hairstyles to reduce the stress on your hair.

The sleek ponytail

The sleek ponytail

Although sleek ponytails look extremely classy, they are one of the biggest reasons behind your hair fall. Tying your hair in a sleek ponytail require you to pull your hair back very tightly which weakens the follicles. Also, one of the side effects of repeatedly styling your hair into sleek ponytails is a receding hairline!

The ballerina bun

The ballerina bun

Ballerina buns are a lot of women’s go-to hairstyles for a lot of occasions. Whether you’re simply chilling at home, hanging out with friends in the morning, or going for an elegant evening look, there is no denying the fact that this hairdo looks extremely classy. However, it is also one of the top hairstyles that could cause hair fall because the hair is tightly pulled back, causing tension at the roots.

Braids and cornrows

Braids and cornrows

If you already feel like your hair is falling out, you should definitely avoid braids and cornrows. As we mentioned before, hairstyles that need you to pull your hair back tightly weaken your roots at the scalp, and since braids definitely require you to do so, they could cause some hair fall. So, instead try and go for looser/messier braids for the health of your hair.

The tight up-dos

The tight up-dos

Up-dos are pretty much up there on the list of hairstyles that damage your hair and cause hair fall. This hairstyle requires you to brush your hair vigorously in the opposite direction in order to create volume. You would also need to use a million hairpins to keep the up-do in place which ends up weakening the scalp in the long run. Up-dos are awesome if you do it once in a blue moon, but too much of it is harmful for your hair.

The doobie wrap

The doobie wrap

The doobie wrap is a common no-heat hair straightening method where you wrap your hair around your head while it's damp to straighten it naturally. Sorry to burst your bubble, but this no-heat hair straightening treatment is actually not that safe for your hair and is one of the most common causes of hair fall. Since this process requires you to part your hair and wrap each section tightly around the crown in the opposite direction, your hair follicles tend to get weak weaker.
