Dealing with dry hair is a constant battle for most women out there! Apart from being exposed to heat, dust and pollution on a daily basis, our hair is also battered by heat-styling tools such as blow-dryers and curling irons which we use almost all the time. And to top it all, we put our hair through chemical treatments such as hair smoothening, bleaching and colouring *phew* There’s no end to the trauma our hair undergoes! So, what’s the solution to treat excess dryness, you ask?

While hair spas can give you temporary relief, it won’t help banish dryness for a longer time. Therefore, a good place to start is your own kitchen shelf. Yes, you read that right! Nothing works better than natural, organic ingredients. They are not just safe and easily available but also cost-effective. Instead of splurging on high-end hair treatments to bring your hair back to life, try items from your pantry which are equally effective. Here are five such DIY dry hair treatments that can leave you with healthy, smooth and luscious tresses.

Honey + Vegetable oil

Honey + Vegetable oil

Mix together two tablespoons of honey and vegetable oil each to make a sticky paste. Apply the mixture all over your hair, making sure to cover each and every strand. Wrap your hair with a shower cap and leave it on for about 15 minutes. Then, remove the cap and shampoo and condition as usual. This conditioning hair mask will nourish your hair and leave you with super soft and smooth tresses.

Vinegar

Vinegar

Before going in with this treatment for dry hair, use a conditioning pack for better results. Once you rinse the pack out of your hair, it’s time for a wash. Add one tablespoon of vinegar to your regular shampoo and wash your hair using this mixture. Follow it up with conditioner and let your hair air-dry. The acidic nature of vinegar will balance out the pH of the scalp, tackle oiliness at the roots and add shine to your mane.

Gram flour + Coconut milk

Gram flour + Coconut milk

Mix together three tablespoons of gram flour and one cup coconut milk, make sure there are no lumps. Starting from the roots, work your way down to the tips, covering each and every strand with the mixture. Wrap your hair into a bun, or simply cover it with a shower cap. Leave it on for about 10-15 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water. Follow it up with a mild shampoo and conditioner. Gram flour and coconut milk together will remove impurities and product build-up from the hair while conditioning it and making it smooth and silky.

Banana

Banana

Take one ripe banana, mash it until it’s completely free of lumps. Apply the mashed banana onto your hair and leave it on for 45 minutes to an hour. Rinse with lukewarm water and follow it up with a mild shampoo and conditioner. Bananas contain potassium which is an essential hair care mineral. This improves elasticity, repairs dry and damaged locks, reduces breakage and makes hair stronger and healthier.

Amla powder + Lemon juice

Mix together two tablespoons of amla powder and lemon juice each. Stir well until you get a consistent paste. Apply the mixture to your hair evenly from the roots to the tips. Let the paste sit in your hair for about 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing with cool or lukewarm water. Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is a miracle elixir for dry hair. And that’s not all! When mixed with lemon juice, this pack cleanses and conditions your hair, leaving it nourished, smooth and shiny.
