- Frizz and dryness are different: humidity makes hair absorb moisture and swell, causing frizz, while dryness results from lost oils and lipids due to washing, heat or chemical treatments.
- Choose based on the concern: use a serum for humidity-driven frizz and flyaways, and a hair mask for persistent dryness, roughness and dullness. For both, combine the two in your routine.
- Monsoon routine: shampoo mainly the scalp, use a mask once or twice weekly, apply serum to damp lengths after washing, avoid heavy oiling and dry hair fully before heading outdoors.
01Frizz vs dryness

Frizz happens when hair absorbs water vapour from humid air and swells unevenly. Hydrogen bonds in the hair fibre briefly rearrange, the outer cuticle lifts, and strands that lay flat indoors start to puff up. That's the halo around your crown that seems to appear the moment you step outside.
Dry hair feels rough even when the weather is calm. Washing, heat styling, sun exposure and chemical treatments can strip the oils and lipids that help keep strands flexible and glossy. Ends that feel straw-like or look dull straight after a wash point to dryness rather than a bad weather day.
The cuticle is made of overlapping scales, much like roof tiles. Hair with higher porosity has more gaps between them, so it takes in humid air faster. Colour, keratin treatments and heat damage can increase porosity. Straight, wavy, curly and coily hair can all frizz, though curlier textures tend to show it sooner because their curved cuticle structure leaves more surface area exposed to humid air. Hair that's coloured, keratin-treated or regularly heat-styled often shows signs of both frizz and dryness through monsoon.
02Should you use a serum or a mask?

If your hair looks smooth indoors but puffs up outside, start with a serum. It coats the cuticle to limit how much humidity gets in. If your hair stays rough regardless of the weather, reach for a mask to replenish moisture and lipids lost through washing and styling. A serum alone won't replace what dry hair is missing, and a mask alone may leave humidity-prone hair without enough protection once you step outside.
PROMEND Oil Resurrection serum , from ₹999, is a lightweight oil-in-serum for humidity frizz, flyaways and loss of shine. It contains 89% pure oils plus keratin, collagen and elastin, which coat the hair shaft and seal the cuticle against moisture in the air. Nexxus attributes "72 hours of smoothness" to the formula. Use 1–2 drops on damp or dry lengths after every wash, then a little more on flyaways if needed during the day.
PROMEND Repair Keratinizing Treatment Mask, ₹1,899, is a rich rinse-out cream for persistent dryness, rough texture and dull ends. Its bond-generation technology restores moisture and flexibility to the hair fibre, according to Nexxus. The brand reports a "57% reduction in frizz" and manageability lasting "up to 100 hours" with regular use. Apply it from mid-lengths to ends once or twice a week. You can read more about hydrating hair masks.
If you're washing frequently, PROMEND Repair Keratinizing Shampoo, is ₹1,399. It's a lathering, sulfate-free cleanser with a moisture-line protein formula designed to cleanse gently. Focus it mainly on the scalp every wash day. Nexxus describes it as part of its "most concentrated" formulations, made for a sensorial, salon-style wash experience.
Frizz that's become more obvious as a keratin or smoothening treatment fades may call for something more specific. Nexxus PROMEND Repair Keratinizing Treatment Mask, ₹1,899, targets chemically treated strands rather than general dryness. The Nexxus PROMEND range is also available on Nykaa, TIRA, Amazon, Myntra and Zepto.
03A monsoon routine that makes sense
For hair that gets dry from extra washing and frizzy outdoors, use the mask once or twice a week, then apply serum to damp lengths after every wash. That's the thinking behind Nexxus's three-step PROMEND regimen: shampoo, mask, serum. On other wash days, skip the mask but keep the serum. If your scalp gets oilier in humid weather while your ends stay dry, keep serum strictly on the lengths and ends, never the roots. Our guides to monsoon hair care and greasy hair cover those wash-day questions in more detail.
I would go lighter on pre-wash oiling during monsoon. Heavy oils combined with humidity can weigh hair down without adding shine, and a heavy overnight application can leave it greasy and flat if overdone. Wash with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo, blot rather than rub with a towel, and dry your hair fully before going out. Damp hair is more porous and frizzes faster. Rinse rainwater and pollution off your scalp as soon as you can, and avoid very hot water, which strips moisture.
If you also have scalp itching, flaking or noticeably more shedding than usual, see a dermatologist. Persistent scalp problems and hair fall can have causes a serum or mask won't address.
04FAQs
Yes. A lightweight oil-in-serum formula can be used daily, ideally after every wash and as a light touch-up on flyaways. Keep it off the scalp so your roots don't look weighed down.
Heavy pre-wash oiling isn't a direct cause of frizz. It can make hair feel greasy and flat in humid weather if you overdo it. A lighter pre-wash application followed by a proper wash works better than leaving a heavy layer on overnight.
Both work, though damp hair tends to take it more evenly. Apply 1-2 drops to towel-dried lengths after washing, then use a smaller amount on dry hair if flyaways return.
Keratin and smoothening treatments temporarily coat the hair shaft, reducing porosity and humidity absorption. As that coating fades, your hair's natural porosity returns and underlying damage can become more obvious.
Not directly. Frizz and dryness concern the cuticle and moisture in the hair fibre. Hair fall can have separate causes, including scalp health and internal factors. If shedding increases noticeably, speak to a dermatologist or trichologist rather than trying to treat it with a serum or mask.
