5 things you should never put on your face

DIY solutions may seem like the most natural and affordable way to get rid of a skin problem. But, not all ingredients in their pure and natural form are suitable for your delicate facial skin.

You need to be extra careful about your face because it is the first thing people notice and certain ingredients can darken, irritate or even burn your skin.

It is easy to panic and reach out for a DIY replacement when you run out of your skincare products. But there are some things that should never apply to your facial skin. Read on to find out what they are.

Hot water

Waxes

While getting a steam facial is fine, hot water should not touch your face directly.

Most people find it relaxing and comfortable especially during winter but hot water will strip the moisture off your skin and make it stretchy and dry.

Always use lukewarm water to wash your face to maintain a healthy pH balance and keep your skin supple and nourished.

Lemon juice

Waxes

Lemon can add a lot of flavour to your food and is also quite healthy for your body. But applying lemon topically on your skin is not a good idea.

A lot of DIY solutions will tell you that it helps in skin brightening and whitening but you should know that the high level of citric acid in it can damage your skin and cause burns. It can also lead to breakouts and irritation.

Toothpaste

Waxes

Most beauty websites will suggest you apply toothpaste on a pimple as a quick remedy to dry it out. But toothpaste can increase melanin production and form discolouration and dark spots on the areas where it was applied.

Mint is a common ingredient used in toothpaste which can further irritate the skin and cause blemishes.

Expired sunscreen

Waxes

Most women only apply sunscreen while going out on a sunny day at the beach or when they’re going for a swim.

They will reach out for the sunscreen in the back of the cabinet from last summer, the problem here is that the sunscreen may have expired by now and won’t offer any sun protection.

Spend a few extra bucks and buy a new one, also apply it every single day!

Waxes

Waxes

The skin on your body can tolerate waxing but your face may not.

Some women have a lot of facial hair and waxing might be their only option, we suggest you do a spot test before applying wax on a huge part of your face to prevent irritation.

Medication for acne, wrinkles and sun damage make skin extra sensitive so you need to be extremely careful before applying wax on your facial skin.
