Much like everything else, there are a lot of beauty habits that belong just to the mini versions of you. Washing your face once a day with soap was how desi girls were raised. And even though our adult versions know better, we still do remember much of these teachings from our younger years. For instance, my mother taught me the old 'rinse-and-repeat' method of shampooing my hair. Mini-me had super thick and coarse hair which could not be washed every day. So the bi-weekly washes used to be all about double shampooing. But as I grew up, I heard more about how this method can overdry your hair and is only a marketing gimmick to make people go through their bottles of shampoos quicker. But turns out, that is not the whole truth...not even close!

Double shampooing is a process where you wash your hair with product twice in the same showering session. This method is especially good for women who have overly oily scalps, but dry ends. It should also be the go-to method of cleansing your hair if you tend to use a lot of styling and hair care products. Instead of washing your hair daily, you can just double wash in one session. This will reduce the greasiness and help you stick to washing your hair twice or thrice a week.

The logic is pretty simple actually. The first wash works by breaking down oils, dirt and product buildup on your scalp. This is why you might notice that the first wash never generates enough lather, even if you are using foamy shampoos. The second wash gets rid of the dirt and impurities completely leaving the hair squeaky clean. Make sure you're using sulfate-free, hydrating and moisturising shampoos for your double shampooing needs. Minimise the use of deep cleansing to once a month as they can strip your hair of natural oils and dry out the ends.

03A step-by-step guide to double shampooing your hair

Step 01: Start off by thoroughly wetting your hair from root to tip. Depending on the length and body of your hair, take a handful of shampoo and apply it on just your scalp. Step 02: Massage the shampoo gently on your scalp. Use enough pressure to make sure the product is penetrating your scalp and do it for about 35 to 40 seconds. Step 03: Rinse! Step 04: For the second round, pour a lesser amount of shampoo in your palm than what you used before. Again, apply it just on your scalp, scrub for one minute and rinse completely. Make sure you're not taking the product to the ends of your hair as the soapy water is enough to clean it. Step 05: Finish up with a conditioner; keep for 3-5 minutes and wash off thoroughly.
