Winter hair care: Hair-oiling tips to kiss dry hair goodbye this season

If your hair type is dry, then you’re probably familiar with problems like frizziness, rough texture and lack of shine. However, with the onset of winter, these problems seem to multiply and no amount of conditioner seems to lock the moisture into your hair.

We get it, dry hair can be a bane, especially during winter. But it can be tamed with the help of a simple hair care treatment — oiling. Now, simply picking a ton of oil and pouring it onto your scalp isn’t the right way to go about it. Keep these simple tips in mind while oiling your hair and kiss dry hair goodbye this winter.

Apply at least twice a week

Don’t leave the oil on for too long

Since your hair is on the dry side, it is better to apply hair oil twice a week during winter for better nourishment. Warming the oil a bit in the microwave before applying ensures better penetration into the hair follicles and offers deeper moisturisation. Depending on the length of your hair, take a few tablespoons of oil in a bowl and place in the microwave for 30 seconds. Once it's warm enough to touch, apply on the scalp and work your way through the tips.

Give attention to your scalp too

Don’t leave the oil on for too long

Our scalp produces natural oils to keep itself nourished and a lot of women are advised against applying oil on the scalp. However, this doesn’t work for everyone. Those with dry hair also tend to have dry scalp, this means it needs external nourishment too. Section your hair and apply the oil using your fingertips. However, don’t apply a lot of oil as it can drip down your face and clog your pores, resulting in acne.

Add other nourishing ingredients

Don’t leave the oil on for too long

Coconut, olive, jojoba, and almond oil are all great for dry hair. You can apply different oils to your hair or a mixture of two oils for better results. If you have other hair concerns like dandruff or hair fall, adding natural ingredients like fenugreek seeds, tea tree oil, aloe vera gel can improve the hair texture and boost growth too.

Don’t leave the oil on for too long

Leaving the oil on your hair for 10-12 hours is not going to offer better nourishment. 3-4 hours is enough for your hair to absorb all the goodness from the oils. During those 3-4 hours, you can steam your hair or wrap a towel soaked in hot water over your hair. This allows your hair to absorb the moisture quickly and looks shiny and lustrous post shampooing.
