Trends are cyclical and tend to make a comeback a decade or two after they first grew popular—just look at the resurgence of flip phones, low-rise jeans, and the middle parting. In fashion and beauty, one of the biggest trends of the 2020s is all things Y2K-inspired. So, it's no surprise that frosted eye makeup looks are taking over 2024. What better way to brighten up our gloomy rainy season than by embracing the chill with frosty, metallic makeup?

Why So Frosty?

Simply put, frosty eye makeup is all about shimmer, shimmer, and more shimmer. Need some inspiration? This look adorned every star of the 90s and early 2000s, from Pamela Anderson and Britney Spears to Paris Hilton.

Fast forward to the 2020s, thanks to Euphoria, this trend has permanently influenced Gen-Z's favourite makeup trends. Now, there are two main techniques you can experiment with to create stunning frosty eye-catching looks.

How to Stay Frosty?

One option is the classic frosty eye, achieved by applying a shimmery eyeshadow across your eyelids. It's a great way to freshen up your makeup during the monsoons with a cool splash of color.

Another approach to achieving frosty eye makeup is to blend it into more modern makeup looks. This can involve adding shimmer to a smokey eye or using frosted, shimmery eye pencils. Sounds simple, right?

Choosing the Right Shades

Shades popular in the early 2000s, like shimmery pastel green, lavender, and baby pink, work perfectly for this. Our favourite? A cool, icy blue.

To explore your options, we recommend grabbing an eyeshadow palette like the Lakmē Absolute Spotlight Eyeshadow Palette - Sundowner—it's packed with light frosted and matte shades.

For the classic frosty look, swipe any of the frosty shadows over your lids. If you prefer something subtle or don’t want to experiment much, mix them with matte or dark shades for a nude or smokey eye.

Balancing Your Look

So, how do you make your frosted, metallic eyes look flawless?

  • Frosty eyes are all about high impact. So don’t be shy–add layers and layers of eyeshadow until you’re satisfied with the opacity.

  • Bright icy looks can look incomplete without the right accompaniments. Pair your frosty eyes with a generous coat of mascara or false lashes to frame your eyes and open them up.

  • For a balanced look, minimal makeup is key. Keep the contour, blush and lips subtle and muted. But if you want the Y2K look, you will see a lot of maximalist girlies pairing icy blue frosted eyeshadow with a lot of pink blush, tons of highlighter and frosted lips.
