Diwali skincare guide: let your skin glow brighter than the diyas this festive season

We are on the home stretch for the Diwali weekend and you must be getting ready for it all! With the stress of the cooking, cleaning and decorating the house, it must be getting pretty hectic. We totally understand if you said that you have no time left for taking care of your skin with all that is going on. The thing is, your skin needs extra looking after during Diwali for many reasons. Firstly, there is all the smoke and dust because of firecrackers that can settle on your skin and clog your pores. Secondly, it's all the sweets that you are going to gorge on, which can take a toll on your skin (yes, sugar actually breaks down collagen and decreases the elasticity of the skin). So make sure your skin also enjoys Diwali as much as you will, by taking care of glowing skin tips.

There is no need to change your daily skin routines drastically, but keeping the following points in mind will certainly help you make sure your skin looks radiant and glowing through the festive season. These pre-, during and post-Diwali skin tips will help you sail through with skin looking every bit as radiant as the diyas your light!

Prepping your skin for the festive season

De-stressing before Diwali

As we’ve already mentioned earlier, the dust and pollution you face during the Diwali season isn’t very good for your skin. And all that oily, sugary food that you’ll probably be gorging on will need you to detoxify your system, especially to get your skin back to its radiant best. You could start your day with a lukewarm glass of water, with a hint of squeezed lemon and a spoonful of honey mixed in it. Not only will it help cleanse your digestive system, it will also, in a way, get your system prepped for all that sweet and oily food that you're going to eat.

Once you’ve made sure you are detoxed from the inside, cleansing your skin is the next most important step on your skincare checklist. Ensure that you put your skin through the entire CTM (cleanse, tone and moisturize) routine. The Dove Beauty Moisture Conditioning Facial Cleanser is one product that not only cleanses your skin, but also has a nutrium beauty serum that moisturizes your skin deep down, giving it a soft and supple feel.

You can follow up the cleansing step with a nice scrub to exfoliate your skin, helping you to get rid of all the pollution, dirt, grime and dead cells that might have accumulated on your face. You could either make a scrub at home by yourself using ingredients such as milk, salt and lemon (or maybe milk cream, ground sugar and a few drops of olive oil) or you could opt for the Lakmé Blush & Glow Strawberry Face Scrub that contains natural exfoliants like cornmeal, strawberry extracts, walnuts and apricots which help slough off impurities like blackheads, dead cells and excess oil, while also unclogging your pores to provide you with soft and glowing skin.

Packing in all the good stuff

Once you’ve gotten your skin nicely prepped with a CTM routine, it is time to enrich it with a face pack. You could pick up the Lakmé Strawberry Cleanup Mask which contains strawberry extracts, vitamin B3 and comes with the absorbing power of clay as well. Or you can find ingredients in your kitchen and cook up a homemade face pack.

For making a good all-natural face mask, you could combine a bunch of ingredients together, such as lemon juice and tomatoes (just mash a tomato and add a few drops of the juice to it), or bananas and honey (mash a banana and add a spoonful of honey to it). Let the mask sit on your face for about 15-20 minutes before washing it off with cold water. You can even give your face a nice little cold massage by rubbing a couple of ice cubes directly onto your skin after the masking session. You’ll be glowing brighter than all the lamps being lit in your house for Diwali by the end of this routine.

We completely understand that there are a lot of household chores to get done with, even when they’re divided between all the members of the family, and that there are guests to attend to as well. But between all of this, it is also important that you take some time out for yourself and relax for some time. Once you’re done with everything on your to-do list, visit a spa if there’s one nearby. Or take a nice relaxing aromatherapy bath or treat yourself to facial massage using jojoba or almond oil. You could even lie down, place tea bags on your eyes (or cover your face with a hot and damp towel) and take a short 10-minute nap.

Stress can cause your face to look extremely dull and tired, since it stresses your skin and increases the production of hormones such as cortisol. This further increases the production of natural oils, making you look oily. We’re pretty sure that’s not how you wish to appear and greet your guests this festive season. So relax for a bit, treat yourself to a nice spa treatment (you certainly deserve this) and get ready for this year's Diwali bash!
