You’ve probably already heard about the ‘paraben-free’ craze that’s hit the beauty industry like wildfire. But as is the case with every new trend, the paraben-free story has brought along with it a host of myths, controversies and rumours as well.

A lot of people have started to opt for paraben-free products without really understanding what parabens are and how they could be harmful.

Fret not though ladies, for here’s a crash course on understanding the reason why paraben-free products are the next big thing...

What are parabens?

Parabens are a class of preservatives used to enhance the shelf-life of a number of cosmetic products in the beauty industry. They allow your cosmetic products to survive in your cabinet for months, sometimes even years, thus preventing any bacterial growth from spoiling them. Some of the commonly found parabens to look for in the list of ingredients of your product are methylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben.

Why are parabens considered bad?

Although there’s no direct relation between parabens and breast cancer conclusively proven as yet, numerous studies have shown that parabens penetrate deep into your skin and remain within the tissues. Furthermore, they’re also known to imitate the action of oestrogen on your body, thereby disrupting the hormonal functioning of your body. Since oestrogen has the potential to shoot up breast cell division and thereby lead to tumours, it’s not difficult to see why there’s a connection being made between parabens and breast cancer.

With manufacturers constantly coming up with new and better preservatives to be used in beauty products, there’s no real reason for us to continue using those containing parabens. Here are a few paraben-free beauty products that we’re absolutely in love with.
