What causes dry skin in summer?

What causes dry skin in summer?

While dry skin is associated more with the colder months, there are plenty of reasons you can suffer from it in the summer as well. Inability to stay hydrated on hot days leads to sweating and loss of fluid from the skin leading to irritation and redness. Clogged pores are one of the side effects of dehydration that can hinder the release of your skin’s natural oils that helps keep the skin supple. The flakiness is most evident on the face as it is the most exposed part of our body.

Factors, like sitting in an air-conditioned room all day and taking hot showers, can also lead to dry skin. Taking a dip in chlorinated water can also lead to peeling of the skin. In addition to drinking enough water, cutting down on sun time and following a basic CTM method of skincare, here are some tips to help you get rid of dry and flaky skin!

  • Aloe Vera

This natural ingredient is your best friend for the sweaty season; a tube of one should be essential in your vanity! Aloe vera has multifold benefits of relieving dry skin, flakiness, sunburn, itchiness and other skin issues. It enhances collagen in your skin to help with the elasticity. It also has anti-inflammatory agents to calm down sweaty skin and that too in a couple of minutes!

  • Moisturising oils

The misconception that you cannot use facial oils in the summer should already have been done with by now. Moisturising oils like jojoba, olive, almond, and vitamin E capsuled variants can help get rid of flaky skin. They help with excessive dryness, protect from photo-ageing of skin, have antioxidant properties, and are packed with the goodness of fatty acids. Make sure to never apply them directly to our skin; instead, dilute in warm water and dab on with a washcloth.

  • Glycerin/Vaseline

Glycerin works towards enhancing skin hydration and skin barrier function; protecting your skin from sun damage. Vaseline, on the other hand, is made of petroleum jelly that locks in moisture in your skin and prevents water loss due to the heat. Use these as a targeted treatment like dry skin around the mouth or flakiness on your cheeks. You can pick a multipurpose option like the Vaseline Aloe Fresh Petroleum Jelly for added benefits.

  • DIY masks and scrubs

A lesser-known trick to beat dry skin is to consume milk. But, if you wish to spare yourself the extra calories, opt for a milk powder face pack. The same can be applied to many DIY face masks with ingredients like rosewater, avocado, banana, apple cider vinegar, shea butter, strawberries etc. It is important to exfoliate your skin once a week and a couple of homemade DIY scrubs can keep the dryness at bay. Multani mitti, brown sugar and turmeric can all be used to alleviate signs of dry, flaky skin.

  • Facial mists for the win!

Facial mists can and should be your bestie in the summer as they are excellent at getting rid of surface dryness in a matter of minutes. Infused with emollients; mists are a lighter version of creams and lotions but are equally effective. They also are a great pick-me-up whenever you are feeling flushed and want an instant glow!
