Acne, blackheads, dryness, etc. are skin issues that not every woman might face because they majorly depend on your skin type and external conditions. However, when it comes to ageing — no one can escape it. With rising levels of environmental aggressors, the signs of ageing have started appearing sooner and women are being advised to incorporate anti-ageing products as early as their mid-20s.

To understand the right way to care for your skin and fight the signs of ageing, we consulted Mumbai based dermatologist and aesthetic physician Dr. Pallavi Sule to guide us. Read on as she shares some important anti-ageing tips and recommends ingredients to use in your 20s, 30s and 40s to ward off premature signs of ageing.

“If you haven’t already, start using sunscreen. It is the first product that prevents skin from photoageing — ageing that happens due to sunlight. Fine lines and wrinkles can be delayed by using sunscreen,” advises Dr. Sule. Apart from sunscreen, you should also focus on ingredient based products in your 20s to stop the depletion of collagen and elastin. For this Dr. Sule suggests, “Those in their 20s should look for a product that contains vitamin C, as it helps boost collagen, tightens the skin and gives it a healthy glow.”

As you age, the body stops producing collagen the elastin, that’s when you have to add more than one active ingredient in your anti-ageing skincare routine to prevent wrinkles and fine lines. “After introducing vitamin C in your 20s, retinol based products should be added once you enter your 30s. A lot of depigmentation agents that help in skin recovery like niacinamide and kojic acid should also be added at this stage as the skin is prone to developing brown spots,” says Dr. Sule. Apart from using these ingredients, moisturising your skin at least twice a day and applying sunscreen every few hours is a must.

In your 40s and beyond, skin starts to become drier and the signs of ageing look more prominent. Instead of using heavy creams and serums that won’t easily penetrate into the skin, use lightweight products. “Other than retinol which effectively helps in delaying the signs of ageing, you also need to include a hyaluronic acid based moisturiser that will prevent your skin from becoming dry. Clinical treatments like skin tightening facials may also become essential after your 40s,” says Dr. Sule.
