It’s officially the season of pale, dry skin and chapped lips, which means we can say goodbye to a number of skincare essentials that we really needed in the warm, humid summer. Winter skincare calls for a whole new skincare regimen. However, how different are these summer and winter skincare essetials? Could we use some of the same products in winter as the ones we do in summer? The answer to this is, yes. There are some products we use in warmer weather that are actually essential in lower temperatures as well. If you’re wondering what these products are, here’s a list of 5 winter skincare essentials we tend to forget about the chilly months…
The sun’s UV rays are as powerful in the winter months as they are in the summer. Just because it’s way cooler outside, it doesn’t mean that the sun has disappeared—it’s harmful UV rays are very much present, and are doing an unspeakable amount of damage to our skin. It’s hence really important that we remember to put on sunscreen before stepping outside (20 minutes before, to be precise)—even if it’s for an hour or an entire day. So, before you neglect sunscreen, remember that it’s the number one reason behind premature ageing, and blemished skin.
We recommend: The Lakmé 9to5 Hydrating Super Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++ which is perfect for oily skin types—it offers protection without the usual greasiness of sunscreen.
2. Lip balm with SPF
The winter really takes a toll on one’s lips, doesn’t it? You find that the cold has made your lips extremely dry and flaky, and so, you resort to using lip balm or licking your lips. However, just like your skin, your lips also require good protection from the sun’s UV rays. So, add a lip balm which has SPF in it to your winter skincare essentials list to give your puckers the care they deserve.
We recommend: The Lakmé Lip Love Lip Care that comes with a dual core—one that lends your lips hydration and the other that gives them colour.
Everyone with oily skin probably enjoys the winters, as the cold weather tends to dry skin, and make it look a little less like a frying pan. While this may prompt you to skip the moisturising step from your CTM routine when it comes to skincare in the winter, let us warn you that that is a bad idea. If your skin isn’t hydrated enough, it will take matters into its own hands and secrete more oil to lubricate itself, something that will lead to unwanted breakouts. It’s therefore a good idea to add a lightweight, hydrating moisturiser to your winter skincare arsenal.
We recommend: The Lakmé Peach Milk Moisturiser that’s filled with a blend of wholesome peaches. It feels light and non-oily on the skin while giving it just the right amount of hydration.
Exfoliating your skin with a scrub isn’t only meant for the summer. It’s an important part of your winter skincare routine too! It’s imperative that you get rid of all the dry and dead skin cells that are accumulating on your body over the course of the winter months. Don’t over-exfoliate though—you may be left with red, itchy skin if you do.
We recommend: The St. Ives Coconut Facial Oil Scrub that’s made with 100% natural exfoliants, grapeseed oil and is paraben free.
You’ve probably heard that alcohol-based toner dry your skin substantially in the winters. Well, you heard right. However, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t use toner when the weather’s cold and dry. Toner is an extremely important part of any skincare regimen no matter what the season, and so, in winter, you should use a toner that’s free of alcohol.
We recommend: The Lakmé Absolute Pore Fix Toner whose alcohol-free formula helps to tighten pores.
