If there’s someone who’s faced several brickbats for her curvaceous body, it is Vidya Balan. But you know what makes us want to salute her? The fact that she is so comfortable in her skin. In a world of movies where skinny was another word for beautiful, Balan had the gumption to change the rules and flaunt her curves with utmost ease. While the public was already throwing words like ‘fat’ and ‘unappealing’ at her, she went ahead and even put on as much as 12 kgs to do justice to her role in The Dirty Picture a movie that got her the National Award. So proud is she of her voluptuous frame that she even stated in several interviews to the media that she celebrates her fuller figure and that discussing her body is nobody’s business.
It was assumed that the new generation of actresses needed to be in the ‘skinny’ club. How otherwise was she going to star alongside actors whose movies go on to becoming 200-crore grossers? Enter Sonakshi Sinha, the not-so-skinny girl who went on to do several 100-crore hits and managed to stand out even in a Salman Khan movie. She didn’t fit the bill of the perfect actress – skinny, starved and fainting on the sets. Instead, she was happily voluptuous and yet, had talent in plenty to silence her detractors. But the bigger reason why she’s one helluva brave woman is because she has the courage to speak her mind when she’s judged for her frame. Case in point—she recently posted a picture of a skeleton on her Instagram account and said, “To all those who keep commenting on my weight, whether it’s a full picture, or a close up where you can’t see jack. Take a good look at this picture. Now get this: 1) this ain’t ever gonna be me. 2) get over it (sic).”
You might be seeing a fitter Parineeti Chopra today given the fact that she has often admitted how she’s always wanted to get fit and lose some amount of weight. However, what you see of her isn’t a drastic, sickly weight loss. Pari is now far leaner and fitter than before but she’s far from size zero. The media may have repeatedly called her overweight but the Chopra girl doesn’t believe in the size zero avatar and has often been vocal about the fact that she only wanted to look leaner so she could do justice to certain roles. And boy, does she do a good job at that or what!
Yet another actress who enjoys her curvaceous frame and has managed to break many stereotypes is Huma Qureshi. At a time when her weight was a talking point in the media, she surprised everyone with her Femina cover which said, “I Don’t Owe You Perfection. My Body, My Rules.” It was through one cover that she told all her naysayers loud and clear that she was a girl who celebrated her body and would never resort to unhealthy weight loss. Bravo, girl!
We’ve been fans of Rani Mukerjee ever since she made her foray into films. Two things have remained constant ever since—the fact that she’s never advocated skinny and the fact that she’s always woven magic on screen with her acting chops. Sure, there have been times when a Karan Johar dissuaded her from eating ice-cream on the sets of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai but what remains true is that we’ve never heard news of her starving herself to look as beautiful as she is today. Always seen as the curvaceous one, Rani has been a strong advocator of good health and that sure isn’t achieved with wrong eating habits.
