5 CELEBRITIES WHO ARE QUESTIONING TRADITIONAL BODY IMAGE STEREOTYPES
Written by Chandni GhoshAug 11, 2015
The mark of a confident woman lies in how comfortable she is in her skin. She may be any size she wants but she could blow your mind with the way she presents herself or her ideologies about life. That’s how we should see women, right? Unfortunately, we’re always body shaming someone or the other. Thankfully, there are some celebrities who make a difference by giving out some powerful quotes about body image in their interviews to the media. We give you our favourite ones…
“I believe it’s important to go on insisting that normality is not what we are exposed to. Honestly, among my acquaintances, there is no woman wearing XS. No, sorry, there is one: My daughter. The point is that Mia is 11 years old!”—Kate Winslet
Kate Winslet, you speak for so many women who are body shamed for not ‘fitting in’ by being skinny. In a few lines, she convinces you that big is beautiful and how you need not be apologetic about being a certain size.
“I’ve never wanted to look like models on the cover of magazines. I represent the majority of women and I’m very proud of that.”—Adele
It’s shameful how the idea of perfection is often based on the vital stats of a woman. If she has a model-like body, she’s revered and idolized. Adele, who was a topic of discussion when Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director of Chanel, rudely discussed her weight, responded smartly with this witty quote stating loud and clear that she’s never aimed at being model-like and she takes immense pride in the body she has—one that many women out there will identify with. Kudos to you, girl!
“I thought, well, you might see curves there, but that’s just a bone, so even if I lose weight that’s not going to change anything. That’s how I look. That’s my shape. Do the math.”—Christina Hendricks
Oh Christina Hendricks, how lovely are you! In her typical no-nonsense way, Mad Men’s power girl tells us how you’ll always be too imperfect for the public eye. There’s always going to be someone taking potshots at your weight so the best thing to do is be yourself, accept your shape and take pride in who you are.
“Young women, don’t worry so much about your weight. What makes you different or weird—that’s your strength.”—Meryl Streep.
When Meryl Streep says something, you just listen. Through this quote, she pleads young girls to stop obsessing over their weight. Instead, she tells us to concentrate on our qualities that set us apart from the rest. So inspiring!
“I’m constantly criticised for being too skinny. I’m trying to gain weight but my body won’t let it happen. What people don’t understand is that calling someone too skinny is the same as calling someone too fat, it’s not a nice feeling.”—Kendall Jenner
It’s always nice to get a model’s perspective on how the world views a girl’s body. And what better than supermodel Kendall Jenner to give her opinion on it. One who often gets flak about her skinny frame, Kendall tells us how she should not be pulled up for being a certain size. Most of us assume that calling someone fat is derogatory but truth be told, skinny is just as hurtful. Now that we’ve heard some inspiring quotes, can we stop labeling people, please?
