Going on a diet is a lot easier said than done. It requires an immense amount of discipline and self-control...it isn’t everybody’s cup of tea! If you’ve chosen to go down this road, you should know that there’s going to be endless temptations along the way, always pushing you to give in to those cravings. And even if you do manage to stay strong, there will always be people around you, urging you to cheat on your diet. The most common words you’ll hear are “Just have a bite” or “At least try it” or “One bite really won’t kill you!”

But the thing about indulging is that one bite is never enough…so it’s better to stay away completely. If you don’t try it, it can’t tempt you…it’s just that simple. That’s the kind of mindset you need, to help you hang in there when you’re on a diet.

Wandering what else you should tell yourself? Here’s a bunch of things every girl on a diet is always thinking about:

1. I wonder how many calories this has!

1. I wonder how many calories this has!

Needless to mention, when you’re on a diet you can’t indulge in foods that have empty calories and no nutritional value. This means no doughnuts, cupcakes or dessert of any kind, no sodas and no fried food. Also try to cut back on the bad carbs. Try to convince yourself that you don’t even really enjoy this kind of food…eventually, as the time passes, you’ll actually start believing it and it’ll get easier!

2. Is this fattening?

Always know exactly what you’re eating…it’s the cardinal rule of dieting. This includes knowing the ingredients, nutritional value, added sugar…everything! So the next time you go shopping, make sure to always read the back of pack before picking up any food item.

3. A minute on the lips, forever on the hips!

3. A minute on the lips, forever on the hips!

This is probably every dieter’s favourite line…or possibly even a motto! This should be your mantra for every time you find yourself drawn to that rich chocolate cake on a restaurant menu or that packet of chips your friend is happily devouring in front of your eyes.

4. No sugar please!

No matter the kind of diet plan or what your fitness goals are, sugar is your enemy. Period! Now when we say sugar we obviously mean refined sugar. Natural sugar is good and even essential for your body. Needless to say, refrain from adding refined sugar to your food and even beverages like tea and coffee. Also watch out for pre-added sugar in packaged food items…we often tend to miss out on those.

5. Yay…It’s cheat day!

5. Yay…It’s cheat day!

Allow yourself to indulge once in a while. You’re only human after all and this’ll help you from having a breakdown and going on a binging spree. But make sure to watch the quantities…you also don’t want to go too crazy and ruin weeks of hard work with one bad meal.

6. It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle!

If you think of your diet as a punishment, you won’t be able to see it through. You need to accept it as a permanent change in your lifestyle and focus on all the positive results it’s bringing. Besides, this is an excellent way to silence all those people who question your lifestyle choice and keep trying to tempt you into giving up.

7. It’s okay. I’ll burn it off at the gym!

A diet plan always needs to be paired with regular exercise in order to get the best results. You’re allowed those occasional cheat meals as long as you burn off the calories later. Remember it’s always calories in versus calories out…make sure you’re on the right side of the math!

8. Time to see if this thing works!

If there’s anything a girl on a diet loves to do, its measure the results. There’s really no better feeling than stepping on that weighing scale and finding yourself a few pounds lighter or measuring those hips and basking in the glory of inches lost. It’s a classic effort-reward relationship that makes it all worth it!
