2020 was an iconic year for a lot of reasons, but it was definitely game-changing with respect to our beauty routines. Most of us made the switch to more sustainable beauty routines, and inadvertently, broke free of the expectation to look perfect all the time. What we also did is make beauty rules of our own without the judgment of the beauty police.

Here’s a sneak peek at the list of rules we’re leaving behind in 2020… 2021, here we come!

Rule #1: Reserve dark lipsticks for the night

We spent most of 2020 ensuring that we had the perfect shade of nude for those endless WFH Zoom calls. But it is time to change that. This New Year, wear lipstick shades that make you happy, whether or not they ‘seem’ fitting to the time of day or place.

Rule #2: Bangs don’t look good on curly hair

Honestly, this rule is so passé! Bangs are for anyone who wants to get them, irrespective of their hair type and it’s time we broke free from that stereotype. If you are looking for some inspiration or a push in the right direction, then take a cue from curly-haired celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Zendaya and Selena Gomez.

Rule #3: Glitter makeup isn’t for every day

Glitter has to be the easiest way to amp up just about any makeup look, so it seems almost criminal to only reserve it for special events. While full-blown glitter eyes or lips may be a bit too much for work, there are still a lot of ways you can incorporate this makeup staple in your beauty routine. A glitter eyeliner or a highlighted inner eye corner are some quick and subtle ways to wear glitter every day.

Rule #4: Brows need to be perfectly plucked

This year, it is time to let go of the notion that you need to have perfectly plucked and shaped brows all day, every day. We need to grow comfortable with the idea of having overgrown, bushy brows. Plus there are always your trusted eyebrow products to make them appear more tamed or fuller, should you so prefer. Check out the Lakme Absolute Micro Brow Perfecter; we’re totally crushing on this one!

Rule #5: You need a ton of skincare products for great skin

Thanks to all the Instagram influencers out there, we are made to believe that we need to have an array of skincare products to achieve healthy, glowing skin. Sorry to burst your bubble, girls, but this is absolutely not true. Sticking to a basic skincare routine and using products depending on your skin type and its needs is more than enough.
