Very simply put, oil pulling involves taking about a tablespoon of oil in your mouth and swishing it around for a couple of minutes and then throwing it out. The main purpose of this method is to eliminate or ‘pull’ the harmful bacteria out of your mouth by dissolving them into the oil. The most popular and easily available choice of oil for this method is extra virgin coconut oil, mainly because it has a nice taste.
Here are the benefits of oil pulling
01. Kills harmful bacteria
A lot of bacteria found in the mouth can be harmful and lead to problems such as tooth decay, plaque formation and gum inflammation. And just brushing your teeth twice a day isn’t enough to completely kill them. This is where oil pulling proves to be helpful. It can reduce the number of harmful bacteria in your mouth and prevent a host of dental issues.
02. Reduces bad breath
Poor oral hygiene caused due to lingering bacteria and tongue coating are touted to be two of the most common causes of bad breath in adults. Oil pulling helps to eliminate these bacteria and has been found to be an excellent and natural way to deal with the issue of bad breath.
03. Pulls out toxins from the body
Apart from getting rid of bacteria from the mouth, another great benefit of oil pulling is that it helps to extract harmful toxins and heavy metal from your saliva, tongue and even your body. This is a great way to boost immunity and detoxify your body.
How to oil pull?
