Hair is every girl’s crowning glory, and she deserves to flaunt a great mane every single day. It was with this in mind that a 17-year-old Vaishakhi Haria set out to become a hairstylist. The director and creative head of Splash The Salon, artistic ambassador for a major international hair care brand, as well as a popular celebrity hairstylist today, Vaishakhi seems to have achieved what she wanted.
But how does this young entrepreneur maintain her own gorgeous tresses, what is her daily hair care routine like and where does she find inspiration for her work from? In this exclusive chat with Vaishakhi Haria, we find the answers to all this and more. Excited? Let’s get started…
Tell us a little bit about yourself and how did you end up becoming a hairstylist?
I always loved the fashion world; my mom is a makeup artist too. I grew up watching her create magic on women with her art, and it inspired me to become a hairstylist. I took up a hairstyling course at the age of 17 while in junior college and started my first salon at the age of 19. Since then, I have been a hairstylist and enjoy every bit of it.
What is it that you love the most about your profession?
Each day brings out different creative sides of me. I get to meet wonderful people. My clients share their lives with me, and I love how they put in blind faith in my work. I get to travel the world, which also helps me upgrade my work from time to time. And most of all, I love the smile on my client’s face after a beautiful hair makeover.
From where do you draw inspiration for your hairstyles from?
Honestly, inspiration comes from everywhere if you’re looking in the right places. But I do follow the French fashion world; they are minimalistic yet strong, which is exactly my style.
What are some essential hair care tips for coloured hair?
Hair colour is the most trending service since the past few years. But clients mostly forget about post-colour care. It is essential to maintain the hair after getting it coloured. Visit your stylist at least once in six weeks for proper maintenance, required protein treatments, and a colour refresh if you have picked shades like reds, blondes etc.
What are some hair care tips you personally swear by?
A hair mask after shampoo does wonder for hair texture. You must invest in good products recommended by your stylist as they know what’s best for you. A hair nourishing treatment at least once in six weeks helps retain the moisture in your hair and prevents it from damage.
What’s your everyday hair care routine like?
I shampoo and condition my hair almost every day, followed by working in a leave-in serum/cream, depending on the season. I prefer air-drying over heat, as I like my natural texture.
How do you deal with a bad hair day?
The answer is simple, and most women reading this will get it — a scrunchie!
What is the one message about hair care you’d like to give our readers?
Haircare contributes largely to deciding whether your hair is healthy or not. You may visit a salon once in a few months, but your hair condition says a lot about your daily hair routine.
Invest in good products recommended by professional stylists. Do not buy products just because they have good packaging. Always try to understand the characteristics of your hair care products before buying them.
Please remember, just because it's expensive doesn’t mean it's better. And just because it is cheap, it doesn’t mean it’s bad.
