There are two things pop star Ariana Grande is known for… belting out high notes and flaunting high ponytails. Fun fact: Ariana always wears her hair in a sky-high ponytail because they were left severely damaged after dyeing them red for many years for a TV show. It won’t be a stretch to attribute the popularity of ponytail extensions to her.
Ponytail extensions give you a chance to rock fuller, bouncier and luscious locks without having to tease and tug your natural hair. But, how exactly do you clip on a ponytail extension and what are some of the hair care tips you should be following? We are breaking it down for you!
How to wear high ponytail extensions:
Step 01: Brush your own hair and secure with a hair tie in a high ponytail on the crown on your head. Position the natural pony a little higher than you intend the ponytail extension to be as it can be weighed down a little
Step 02: Brush your ponytail extension before clipping it to your hair. Use a wide-tooth comb, a hairbrush or a shampoo comb to smooth it without causing damage
Step 03: To secure the extension seamlessly, slide the comb part underneath your hair tie. Try to be closest to the topmost part of your ponytail. Follow this up by wrapping the velcro base around your own ponytail, check if it is tightly overlapped and secure. Do not yank and brush your extension after securing it as it can ruin the look of the ponytail
Step 04: The most important step in adding ponytail extensions is to properly camouflage the base where your own hair meets the extension. Grab a hair strand from the extension and tightly wrap it around the top of the ponytail. Work it in a way that the strand ends under the hairstyle and secure in place with bobby pins.
Step 05: Shake your hair to test if your ponytail is secure. Style it the way you like. Follow the same steps for ponytails worn on any height on your head. You can also add details like double tendrils or centre parting to your ponytails looks!
How to care for your ponytail extension:
It is not too tricky to take care of your ponytail extensions. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind:
- Don’t throw away the packaging your hair extensions came in as they can be used to store them later. Make sure your extensions are clean, dry and brushed before storing them. Maintain their natural shape and make sure they're not bundled up somewhere in the corner.
- Don’t overwash your extensions and only subject them to a cleanse when you feel there is product buildup or they have become difficult to style.
- Use gentle products, much like your natural hair, to wash and condition them. Use heat protectant products while blow-drying or styling them. Also, make sure you are blow-drying them on a cool setting. Style your extensions AFTER you brush them out gently to avoid any permanent damage.
