Oh, how we miss our monthly salon appointments! Practising self-quarantine and social distancing mean little to no downtime with a professional, and that can take a toll on your mane. Pile on the stress of a lockdown, disrupted routines, lack of hair care (because there’s nowhere to go) and you’ve got yourself a recipe for disaster. Such a drastic change in lifestyle can affect your tresses, making them dry, dull and uncontrollably frizzy.
Fortunately, there are some ways to deal with your dry hair at home. Here are some ways you can deal with super dry hair during the lockdown!
- 01. Indulge in a deep conditioning session
- 02. Indulge in a hot oil treatment
- 03. Avoid washing your hair every day
- 04. Tweak your diet
01. Indulge in a deep conditioning session
A hair spa at the salon is nothing but a thorough deep conditioning session. Do this at home by using your regular conditioner. Wrap your head with a warm towel when the product is on, wash with cold water and air dry. Make sure you are not exposing your hair to heat on the same day you deep conditioning as it can defeat the purpose of the masking. Do this twice a week for best results.
02. Indulge in a hot oil treatment
A hot oil treatment penetrates deep in your hair shafts and moisturises it from within. Indulge in one at least once a week and use nourishing oil blends to enhance the results. Mix a carrier oil like coconut oil with essential oils such as avocado, jojoba, argan, castor and peppermint to soothe dry and frizzy hair. Apply the concoction from root to tip; you can also use steam or hot towel for optimal results.
03. Avoid washing your hair every day
Now that your hair is exposed to a lesser amount of pollution, sun, dirt and smog, you can avoid washing it every day. Daily shampooing can strip your hair of moisture and make them dry. Stick to washing your hair once in 2 days or every alternate day. If you feel your hair is getting greasy or icky, use a deep cleansing shampoo such as the Tresemme Botanique Detox & Restore Shampoo for a quick scalp cleanse. Pro tip: Avoid applying your shampoo on the ends on your hair. Just massage it on the scalp and let the dripping soapy water clean the rest of your hair.
04. Tweak your diet
Add more hair-loving nutrients in your diet. Vitamin A and C, biotin and iron supplements make your hair stronger and healthier. You should also add omega-3 and antioxidants in your diet; they help reverse stress-induced damage on the tresses. Foods such as salmon, walnuts, kidney beans, berries, etc. promote hair health.
