Causes of premature grey hair

DNA

Your DNA is partly responsible for the condition of your hair from the volume and hair growth to thinning patterns and greying. Studies have found that if your parents or immediate family had grey hair at a young age you might also see your hair turning white at an earlier age.

Stress

Stress affects every part of your body internally, as well as externally. If your stress leads to sleep problems, anxiety, appetite changes and high blood pressure, the aftermath includes a reduction in melanin according to studies. Like your skin colour, melanin is also responsible for keeping your hair black and loss of it leads to greying.

Health conditions

Health conditions and diseases that affect melanin also lead to premature greying. Disorders like autoimmune or thyroid disorders change the colour of skin and hair.

Lack of vitamin B-12

Vitamin B-12 is needed to keep your cells healthy and numerous. A lack of it can lead to less oxygen to the hair cells and weaken them. This will affect your hair’s capability to produce melanin and keep your hair black.

Smoking

If you are a smoker, we are giving you another reason to quit smoking! Studies have found a direct connection between smoking and the early onset of grey hair among young people. This is pretty possible since smoking after all affects blood flow which in turn damages hair follicles.

How to reverse premature greying

While you have to be patient and persistent, you’re in luck. There have been many studies that have solutions to reverse premature greying in people. But there is a catch. It should be noted that if your hair is turning grey due to genetics or just ageing, then it cannot be reversed.

Change your diet

You need all the help you can get from adding vitamins A, B-12, D and E to minerals like zinc, iron and magnesium. Eat green and leafy vegetables, dairy including milk and cheese, eggs, oily fish, cereal, orange juice, sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts, whole grains, avocados, legumes and the like.

De-stress

One treatment for premature grey hair is to do nothing. Yeah, you read that right. Thankfully, the same study that connected stress to greying also gave us a solution. While it is easier said than done, de-stressing and staying calm resulted in patients naturally getting their grey hair back to normal. Find a stress-buster that works for you like walking and meditation, and stay away from stress-inducing activities as much as you can.

Amla

Amla is an age-old remedy that has been used for decades in India to fight premature greying. Since it is loaded with vitamin C, it is a natural astringent that maintains the colour of your hair. It heals damaged hair follicles that are not able to produce the melanin needed to keep your hair black. You can have either the fruit or drink two tablespoons of its juice every day. You can also apply it to your hair topically. If you want to apply amla oil, just take a few drops and massage it on your hair for 20 minutes. Wash it off after an hour.

You can also make a hair mask to treat premature grey hair. Combine equal parts of amla, reetha and shikakai powders, another couple of antioxidant ingredients that are commonly used to fight premature greying. Add drops of water and mix till it forms a paste. Apply it and wash it off with a mild shampoo after 30 minutes. You can apply this mask once a week.

Curry leaves

Curry leaf is another potent natural ingredient that helps in recovering lost melanin in the hair follicles. It also prevents any additional premature grey hair from cropping up. Simply boil a cup of curry leaves with oil. After it cools, massage your hair at night with it and wash it the next day. You can apply it twice a week.

Preventing greying

The adage ‘prevention is better than cure’ holds much importance since the haircare routines to reverse premature greying is a long and slippery slope. Make some lifestyle changes that might otherwise speed up the greying:

  • Oil your hair twice a week with coconut oil

  • Get a minimum of eight hours of sleep

  • Have a healthy diet with vitamins and minerals

  • Stop smoking

  • Don’t wash hair with hot water

  • Cover your hair while under the sun

We hope this has helped. Now try these techniques to save your locks from greying as well as reverse already grey hair.
