All you summer babies love watermelon, don’t you? Apart from being a rich source of antioxidants it also helps in keeping your body hydrated. That’s not all; this yummy fruit has a lot more to offer you. From making your skin soft and glowing to fighting your rashes and reducing the signs of ageing, the list is endless. Want to know more?
Read on as we bring some mind-blowing benefits that watermelon has for your skin!
Soothes sunburns and rashes
You can incorporate watermelon in your skincare routine to increase your skin’s elasticity, combat dryness and dullness, to heal sunburn and treat redness and inflammation caused due to acne. A lot of skincare experts advice eating watermelon as it is good for our gut.
And clean gut is equivalent to healthy and glowing skin. Many beauty brands also include watermelon extracts in their products like facewash, toners, scrubs and masks. We recommend trying out Lakme Blush & Glow Fruity-licious Sheet Mask (watermelon).
Using this mask leaves your skin with the goodness of watermelon extracts, and gives a cooling and soothing effect to the skin. Cleanse your skin thoroughly and pat dry. Apply the sheet mask on your face and keep it on for 15 minutes.
Remove the sheet mask and let the juices get absorbed in the skin for a fruit facial like glow. If you suffer from hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles and lack of moisture, then watermelon is exactly what your skin needs. Below we list the many ways of how watermelon benefits your skin...
1. Soothes sunburn and rashes
Firms your skin
Despite using sunscreen, overexposure to UV rays can cause sunburn, redness and inflamed skin. Since watermelon is naturally moisturising, when combined with cucumber it can provide much needed relief for sensitive sunburned skin.
Blend one cup watermelon flesh and one cup cucumber in a processor. Spoon the mixture in a muslin or cheese cloth and fold it. Gently squeeze the mixture and allow the cloth to soak in the moisture, then place the moist cloth on affected areas for 20 minutes.
Next, you can also make a paste of watermelon and rosewater. Grind watermelon pieces and rosewater into a paste and apply on inflamed or sunburned area. Both watermelon and rosewater have natural antioxidant and soothing properties that aid relief from sunburn.
Watermelon is also a go-to ingredient for acne-prone skin, as it helps calm down the redness and irritation. You can also use the rind (green outer shell) of the watermelon on irritated skin. Refrigerate the rind for 10 to 15 minutes. Cut it into thin slices and place it on the face or on the irritated skin.
2. Firms your skin
Natural exfoliator
Watermelon is rich in antioxidants, lycopene and vitamin C that help fight free radical damage and enhance elasticity of the skin. Vitamin C boosts collagen, thus reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and making the skin look firmer and radiant.
The vitamins also brighten the dull skin. For puffy eyes, freeze coffee and watermelon juice into ice cubes and massage it around the eyes in circular motions. The antioxidants in watermelon will calm the inflammation and caffeine will improve microcirculation.
3. Natural exfoliator
Boosts Hydration
Watermelon is rich in malic acid which helps remove dead skin cells. The grainy particles in the fruit gently exfoliate the skin along with adding hydration thus giving a smoother and glowing complexion.
Apply a spoonful of mashed watermelon onto your skin. It will naturally scrub off any dead skin cells present. You can also make a DIY scrub of watermelon, yoghurt and honey to treat inflamed zits. Watermelon and honey calm the skin while yoghurt lightly exfoliates.
To remove dead skin cells, rub watermelon and tomato pulp across the face or body in circular motions. The malic acid in watermelon and the enzymes in tomato help break down the glue that holds the dead skin cells together.
It's not just your skin that needs TLC but your lips too. We suggest trying St. Ives Juicy Watermelon Lip Scrub. It’s made with 100% natural sugars which removes dullness to reveal super soft, smooth lips. Gently massage a small amount onto the lips. Wipe off and say hello to supple lips.
