For some of us, going to the gym isn’t as easy as it is for a number of fitness freaks out there–who, not matter what happens won’t miss a single workout. Gym gets repetitive and boring most of the time, unless you have a personal trainer to motivate you each time you’re there. For such peeps, forms of exercise like Zumba, swimming or a sport like badminton etc. help. One such form of exercise is Capoeira–an Afro-Brazilian martial art form that’s a combination of elements from dance, acrobatics and music! It’s a form of fitness that’s a lot of fun to do, so, if the monotony of gyms is stopping you from achieving your fitness goals, capoeira is something you should turn to!

It consists of kicks, floor work, and jumps etc. usually done to tribal music. It’s done in groups for two or more.

Here are 5 reasons you should consider taking it up…

Enhances flexibility

Enhances flexibility

A proper capoeira session will make you realize that you’ve not just worked on a specific set of muscles, for example upper body or lower body, (that’s usually done in gyms) but you worked on your body as a whole. It involves a lot of rhythmic stretching that helps loosen stiff muscles, making your body flexible.

Increases stamina

Capoeira is a great form of cardio and is said to burn about 400-500 calories in just an hour. You will find yourself sweating a lot just a few minutes into the workout, which is supremely beneficial. This also helps with blood circulation!

Strengthens your arms and back

Lots of movements in capoeira involve handstands, cartwheels etc. which help tone your arms and back. So, if you have flimsy arms, or a weak back, trust capoeira to help you strengthen them!

Improves your reflexes

As it’s mostly done in groups and involves tricking, attacking and saving yourself from your partner’s movements, the martial art form helps your reflexes and increases alertness.

Just like yoga, a session of capoeira helps relax your mind and body thus contributing towards stress reduction! The music and the fluid movements majorly help combat stress and you feel fresh and energised!

A little disclaimer…

Capoeira is something you can’t master in a day; it’s got a rhythm and pace that’s unique and it might seem a little scary to do in the beginning. But just like everything else, you will get the rhythm and the flow right and will start seeing its effects on your body. While joining capoeira, make sure the instructor is skilled and trustworthy, so do your research right! Capoeira will be even more fun if done with your friends, so, show them this story and we’re sure they’ll be convinced to join a class!
