The Red Carpet is home to some of fashion’s most inspired creations. With major label designers upping their game and reinventing themselves every year plus the addition of so many young and upcoming ones to the mix, it has truly become a platform for fashion evolution.

While there’s a rich history of masterpieces to brag about, this platform has seen a fair share of fashion disasters as well. But today, we’d like to focus on the positives. So we’ve drawn up our own little list of the 8 most iconic Red Carpet dresses of all time. Have a look…

1. Deepika Padukone – Cannes 2017

1. Deepika Padukone – Cannes 2017

Deepika made quite a splash at Cannes this year in a bottle green Brandon Maxwell gown. Looking absolutely fierce at her debut on the French Riviera, her playful wardrobe put her on the map as an international fashion icon. She complimented her gown with sparkling jewellery, green eyes and a no-fuss hairdo.

2. Charlize Theron – Oscars 2005

2. Charlize Theron – Oscars 2005

The 2005 Oscars were one of Charlize’s most glamorous moments in Red Carpet history. She graced the event in a frothy, powder blue Dior Couture gown with a four-foot long train choosing to pair this beaut’ with subtle diamond danglers and a slightly puffy bun. For a change this was one of her more elaborate Red Carpet choices…and we absolutely loved it!

3. Nicole Kidman – Oscars 2007

3. Nicole Kidman – Oscars 2007

Nicole Kidman made a fiery entrance at the 2007 Oscars in this blazing red Balenciaga gown with a gigantic red bow on the right shoulder followed by a thin, sweeping trail. She paired this red-hot number with diamond encrusted cuffs and an embellished clutch. For her makeup, she chose a light, subtle red for her lip and let loose those straightened gold locks to complete her look. This dress was enviably bold and sexy, yet so elegant and has made Red Carpet history as one of the most iconic red dresses of all time!

4. Kate Hudson – Bride Wars Premiere 2009

4. Kate Hudson – Bride Wars Premiere 2009

Kate looked like a work of art in this Oscar De La Renta gown at the New York Premiere of ‘Bride Wars’ in 2009. This black and white geometric patterned strapless mermaid gown, with a peplum at the waist complimented her beautifully is definitely one of her most elegant looks till date. To complete the look, she accessorized with diamond cuff bracelets and tiny tear drop earrings. Her makeup was subtle and she wore her hair loosely tied back with just a few strands framing her face. It was chic, elegant, dramatic, yet not OTT. We loved it!

5. Angelina Jolie – Academy Awards 2012

5. Angelina Jolie – Academy Awards 2012

Angelina Jolie became a Red Carpet sensation after her iconic yet somewhat controversial outfit at the 2012 Academy Awards. She (quite literally) put her best foot forward in this black velvet Atelier Versace gown with a daring thigh-high slit. This outfit made her an instant Internet sensation and was so iconic that it even got its own Twitter handle—@AngiesRightLeg. Prior to this appearance, she had faced some criticism over her dull taste in Red Carpet attire. Well, this dress definitely silenced those guys, didn't it!

6. Jennifer Lawrence – Academy Awards 2013

6. Jennifer Lawrence – Academy Awards 2013

Jennifer Lawrence stole our hearts at the Academy Awards 2013 as she sashayed down the Red Carpet in this stunning pale pink Dior Couture ball gown. She paired this voluminous number with a dazzling strand of delicate diamond beads and drop earrings by Chopard and a simple Roger Vivier clutch. What made this outfit even more memorable was her famous tripping episode as she made her way to collect her Best Actress award. But hey, if you’re going to trip at the Oscars, it doesn't hurt to look like a million bucks while doing it!

7. Blake Lively - Cannes Film Festival 2014

7. Blake Lively - Cannes Film Festival 2014

Now now, when it comes to Blake Lively, we’ve come to expect extraordinary things from her at the Red Carpet (thanks to her Serena Van Der Woodsen days); and clearly, she never disappoints. Blake arrived at the 2014 Cannes Film festival looking like absolute royalty in this elegant Gucci gown paired with Lorraine Schwartz jewellery. To top it off she chose a ravishing shade of scarlet for her lip and nails and finished off with a neatly tied ponytail. Usually, it’s really hard to look both elegant and sexy at the same time…unless you’re Blake Lively, of course.

8. Emma Stone - Met Gala 2016

8. Emma Stone - Met Gala 2016

Emma brought her A-game to the 2016 Met Gala in that plunging ivory Prada gown with a metal corset paired with those beautiful brunette locks. This look was quite a drastic change from her usual choice of attire and a pleasant one at that. The theme of the night was ‘Fashion in an Age of Technology’and we think she totally nailed the brief with this choice.

9. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan – Cannes Film Festival 2017

9. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan – Cannes Film Festival 2017

Speaking of glorious Red Carpet outfits, we’re all still recovering from Aishwarya’s Cinderella moment at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looked straight out of a fairytale in this breathtaking floral-embroidered blue gown by Michael Cinco, and we think she gave every Disney princess a serious run for her money. That plunging neckline, minimal makeup and simple hairdo just amped up the elegance ten folds. Thank you, Ash, for making every girl’s fairytale dress come to life.

So there you have it...some iconic Red Carpet dresses we’re going to remember for a long time. The thrill of discovering something new every time is probably the best part of Red Carpet couture and we can’t wait to see what it brings next.
