Every other day we hear of a new eatery cropping up in Bombay and the newest name on the prowl is The Bao Haus Co. What’s so different about this one you ask? It’s South Mumbai’s newest Asian street food delivery joint that pledges to deliver to your door-step the best quality baos (and more), fresh and steaming hot! Intrigued with their conviction to deliver quality food, we walk in to Siddharth Somaiya’s Bao Haus and try to get a taste of all the culinary chaos and the Baos of’ course. Here is our verdict based on five cracking dishes…

Prawn Crackers

Prawn Crackers

Let’s start with one of our favourites of the lot, the Prawn crackers. Light, crisp and packed with a punch of flavours these crackers with the sriracha sauce turned out to be the best thing we’ve had in a long time. Also sprinkled with the secret house special blend of spices, the crackers are their signature snack, deserving of two thumbs up from us!

Hickory Smoked Wings

Hickory Smoked Wings

What’s not to love about a wholesome serving of chicken wings? Yes, we hear you. Chicken wings work only when they’ve been grilled and tossed well. Unfortunately these chicken wings, when cold smoked over hickory wood chips become hard and chewy in parts while some parts of it remain undone. Although topped generously with garlic aioli yoghurt they didn’t win us over.

Sous Vide Goat Bao

Sous Vide Goat Bao

The best of the baos, this dish is a winner, with those beautifully pickled pears teamed with sous vide goat meat cooked to perfection in jalapeños and in sriracha sauce. This one wins a massive five on five from us.

Pork Belly Burger

Pork Belly Burger

Belgian pork belly, specially imported for its fat and meat layering does complete justice to the burger. Made with sriracha infused cheddar and house made slaw served in a house made brioche bun with fries and the house special sriracha, this pork belly burger also managed to score big on our mark sheet.

Chocolate Bao

Chocolate Bao

This signature dessert bao served with melted marshmallows, brûlée bananas and hazelnut crumble had us drooling for more with its sheer balance of flavours and the yummy bao bread. Another full scorer!

Leek Fritters

Leek Fritters

This dish sounds exotic and tastes nice but we can’t decide what it is that keeps this Middle Eastern delight from winning our stars. We think it’s the aubergine dip that just didn’t manage to get our taste buds ticking. However, we must add that the pomegranate molasses managed to save the day for this dish.

Overall Review – 3/5
