Get The Look: Jennifer Lopez’s 90s-inspired Space Buns
Written by Sumona BoseJul 20, 2020
Jennifer Lopez loves to throw it back...from statement gold hoops to retro hairdos, the 90s is her favourite era to draw inspiration from. Her recent Instagram post where she is rocking grunge-inspired space buns; tucked tightly and finished with slicked-down baby hairs is yet another throwback.
JLo’s hairstylist Chris Appleton revealed the inspiration behind the look to be Baby Spice, the keeper of cute hairstyles in the influential 90s girl gang Spice Girls. JLo’s fringed version of the look is what gives it that 2020-esque edge and we love how adorable it looks. Space buns also happen to be one of the easiest styles to do, so we are stashing this one in our grab-and-go collection. Here’s how you can recreate JLo’s 90s-inspired space buns with the help of this step-by-step guide...
How to:
Step 01: Prep and part
Prep your hair with the TIGI Bed Head Small Talk volumising cream in order to get two nice and chunky buns for the hairstyles. Then, brush your hair out to remove any knots or tangles. Use a tail comb to split your hair into two sections. Part it right down the middle all the way to the nape of your neck.
Step 02: Tie it up
Take each side and pull on top of the highest part of your head using your hands and a thin comb to clean up any bumps; tie with a hair elastic. Don’t worry about your baby hair as you’ll be styling them later.
Step 03: Make the buns
To make the buns, twist down your hair, starting from the base of the ponytail all the way down to the ends. Then, wrap the twisted pony around the hair tie and tuck in. Use bobby pins to properly secure the buns in place.
Step 04: Slick down baby hair
Now it’s time to lay down the baby hair. The first thing to do is to put hair gel into your hairline and start combing with a soft toothbrush. To create JLo’s draped style, lay the baby hairs down and across with the brush. Once you achieve the shape, apply another thin layer of hair gel to increase the holding power and let it dry before you step out of the house.
